Loss of power

Featured Replies

My fabia VRS has just had a massive loss of power. I pulled away from a junction and had a loudish bang followed by a massive cloud of black smoke. the car then had a slight miss fire for 30seconds. It is still running but has no power and black smoke when I put my foot down. Any ideas, hopefully it is just somthing simple like a pipe off a turbo

have you had a look for the blown pipe?

cos that is not Very good, A bang then no power.

Can be anything! gearbox, Clutch, Head, Turbo, pipes, Cam, Cambelt.

The most likely explanation though is that you've popped a joint on the HO side of the turbo between there and the intake plenum.

Engine still runs smoothly ie no abnormal rattles etc and changes gear so it must be turbo related ( I hope)

Ok not being 100% where everything is in the engine where should I be looking for the intake plenum

It'l be a turbo hose popped off. Guaranteed.

Just basically follow all the boost pipes and see if one has popped off. Looking at the engine bay, the most common place is anywhere down the left hand side of the engine IE at the top going to the EGR, Anything through to the bottom where it meets the intercooler. Mine had a habbit of popping off just after the intercooler, so it's cable tied on now to stop that.

I'll take a look when I finish work. ALL Thanks for your help.

Popped boost pipe will throw out black smoke! Youd know if it was turbo as its spectacular smoke and oil everywhere!!!

Quick VAG TDi installation "geography" lesson, assuming a standard car.

The intake and exhaust are both between the engine and the firewall, with the intake plenum above the exhaust and turbocharger. The intercooler is low down inside the right-hand front wing. The suspect pipe run from the turbocharger along the back of the engine to the righthand inner wing, from there forward past the engine and down to the intercooler. From the intercooler the pipes run back up to the top of the enginebay, and back along the RH and back above the turbo to cooler pipes. The joint that is most likely to blow is where the return pipe bends from going up to going back IME, and is also the easiest one to see and work on!
