Hi Guys,

I am currently looking to upgrade my current car to a vRS, I just want to know what kinda things I need to be looking at when buying it?

I am looking to buy a vRS for around £4.5K ish with around 70k on this clock is this unreasonable?

Also there is one near by to me that it up for 4,995k and its done 94,000 miles. I am not sure how many owners etc and if the cam belt and water pump has been done. But on this mileage car what needs to be done as in mechanically? Also what things do I need to be looking out for when buying a vRS

Do a search this question has been answered nearly a million times.

Usual service history and its used 505.01 Oil or else the engine will have serious wear, 94k is not alot for a diesel, but the engine oil is critical on the PD Engines

Should be serviced every 10k

When you put your foot down the car should accelerate if the rev needle goes up and it doesn't accelerate the clutch is slipping

Vibration or judder indicates a worn flywheel

Gearbox should not whine in any gear & it shouldnt crunch the gears when changing gear

Open oil cap and see its fresh oil and not chocolate, if chocolate looking its the head gasket

Check coolant should be pink and not chocolate colour

Keep an eye on the cars temp should not be over the middle line

Look at body work for colour differences, and all panels line up

Ride comfort should be firm not saggy suspension if any funny knocks the bushes are worn

Check all electrics ABS, Traction control, battery, power steering, engine light should only come on for a few seconds on ignition and go off when started

Check lights

Cambelt & water pump change is every 60k or 4 years but its done much sooner to be on the safe side

Brakes should come on firm without pulling to the left, a visual inspection through the alloys will tell you the condition of the brake disc and pads

Hanbrake holds the car try setting of in first gear very gently if it does not move the handbrake is good

Tyre wear should be even, check steering alignment the steering wheel should be in the centre when on a straight road

Oil leaks not common but should not be a messy oily engine bay

Windscreen for cracks/chips,wipers function

Windows go up and down smoothly

Heaters/AC works

Seats condition ask for a valet or discount

Boot spare wheel, alloy locking nut key

Boot has no damp/leaks

When driven the engine should pull hard from 1800- 3000rpm indicates the turbo is doing its job, the usual bit of black smoke is normal

you do need to check if timing belt and water pump have been done already, but if not in will factor into the costs.

The vRS has got a good engine and as long as there's full service history and its been lookd after they can go on for many more miles. if it was me, i'd look at in particular

how it drives. Are there any thuds or bangs. How does it feel when turning full lock and going over speed bumps. If there's any issues with the suspension then usually with this car it will be wishbone bushes or anti roll bar link.

I'd check brakes and clutch as well and find out if and when they were renewed.

Check for any damp smells especially on rear floor mats as could mean a bad seal

The correct oil for the vRS is one meeting 505.01 which is the PD spec. Try to find evidence this has been used.

Make sure the locking wheel nut key is in the boot.

When you accelerate look in your rear mirror and check for smoke.

Listen for the sound the turbo makes as you accelerate past 1800rpm. It does take some time for it to warm up but when its on tap you'll know it.

If you know someone who has a vRS, then drive it! will give you an idea what it should feel like also.

Also worth checking the tyres and measuring thread depth. If it is low you could perhaps use that as a bargaining tool.

Thanks very much for that! Will bear all of that in mind.

Hopefully test drive one soon ( I hear there quite quick standard). I think a remap will also be a possibility after a couple months of purchase :)
