bottom of me car falling off!

Featured Replies

so I got the altenator pulley sorted before going on a big drive from Newcastle to ireland. I thought I'd sort out tyres too, which I did yesterday. driving through scotland today and I heard a god awful bang and then a flapping noise. got out and checked and the plastic sheet that sits under the car to protect the engine has bust and was hanging down,I pushed it back in place and it lasted about 20miles, crap! I eventually got a load of duct tape and taped it up. does anyone know where to get my hands on one and roughly how much to budget for to get sorted?

eBay will probably be the best place.

as an aside, I just had to get a new alternator put on also, because the pulley sheared off. was this the same that happened to you? what engine/miles have you got?

that's a good idea, do you know the part name I'd need to look for?

I think the part is called 'Sound deadener for manual gearbox - front centre' - assuming your car isn't an automatic. This part is for diesel engine cars. The petrol engine equivalent is smaller and is just called 'Sound deadener'. A car breaker might be a good source.

It's the big bit of plastic, covers the full engine area- is that the sump guard? I don't know much about these things and I've done some searching but just got more confused - can't work out if its sump guard, underbody plastic protection or something else. Some people seem to think it's merely cosmetic- not sure about that, the engine was full of little stones as soon as it went pop. I can find some info on sound deadener, need to keep searching for one of whatever it is I need.

Sure does, don't know how much longer the old duct tape will last!

not long takes a lot of buffeting from under car air flow if it comes off youll run over it and so will the car behind you not good i would take it of until you can get a new one just make sure you dont off road until you fit new one :D

Same thing with the plastic engine tray/base happened to me about 18 months ago.

It just hung off and made a lovely grating sound on the road as I drove through town... I got lots of bemused looks.

Main dealer replaced it for £130 + VAT.

think mine on last legs neva eva had this prob with any of my other cars

undertray thing attached to the wheel arches?

mine fell of, is now in the bin :D

Well, I took it to a local garage here in Derry and they used cable ties to secure it back in place, rock solid now. The fella who did it for me said they get loads of cars in with the same problem and many people just chuck theirs away. I can see it being a problem with the Derry and Donegal roads being so rubbish.

Done about 250 miles and then I heard that dreaded scrapping and flapping sound again, the big plastic tray is hanging off again. Are these easy enough to take of and more importantly- are they safe to remove? :wonder:

I've never had one from new. No issues.

Ripped mine off months ago...Ive had no problems either (touchwood) :p

They are more important on diesels - for noise control I think. Why did the garage not secure it properly? i.e. screw into the surround plastic / car chassis?

They did a quick fix job for nothing- was hopeful it would work as they secured all the points where the screw had fallen out, well I say secured, they used big thick cable ties :wonder: I might just rip the thing off- if I can work out how to.

when mine fell off i was running late for work,

prosesse of removal kick , grab then yank it off

i will tidy it up next time its up in the air
