Another screen bites the dust

Featured Replies

I do wonder if this is a high rate of breakages or just the norm for today's road surfaces?

There does appear to be more broken screens around generally, probably because of the number of potholes and broken tarmac following our "lovely" winter. Plus Powys seem to have started the "spray and sprinkle" season!!

Autoglass were out to fill some chips in the windscreen of my old car just before the Yeti arrived.

The fitter remarked that he's never been this busy before - previously the waiting time for a repair was two days or so and they were running at two weeks - and that was with them cramming more appointments into the day.

I also enquired of him if windscreens were getting thinner, and was that why they broke so easier?

His answer was no, they're not. However, since they are now part of the "structural integrity"* of modern cars in a big way they are also under a lot more stress, which is why a chip can become a crack quite easily.

* not his exact words, and there is a proper term, but I can't recall it at the moment!

Hi Llanigraham,

I like the expression 'spray and sprinkle' it just about sums it up.

A recent trip took me onto a road that had just been completed, recommended speed 20mph, along the opposite carriage way a 'white van' came along pushing 50mph.

It was like a machine gun hitting the side of the car, big grin all over the drivers face! He managed to 'spray' about five of us.

I've always called it "Kitty Litter", cos that is exactly what it looks like, and feels like to drive on.

yep us bikers call it kitty litter too, horrible stuff to ride on

They have just thrown a load of this surface destressing on a section of the A166. Most annoying thing about it is a nice new surface was only laid there end of last year; completely ruined it now :(

That hacked off about it considering the dire state of other sections of this road, that I sent an e-mail to the Councils complaints line. Await their response with anticipation :wonder:

Might e-mail the MP while I'm in this frame of mind too, as the new government is into belt tightening :S and this was a blatant waste of the road buget.
