Sawtoothing Tyres

Featured Replies

A simple controlling measure, to minimise wear and effect, is to switch tyres left to right periodically e.g. every 5,000 miles (I did this yesterday on my Ultrac Sassantas that were showing slight signs of sawtoothing). Clearly this can't be done with directional tyres (only uni-directional or asymmetrical).

For directionals you could just swap front to rear when the fronts are 2/3rds worn. I'm doing this today if I get the time later..

If your fronts were worn anything like mine were, it will be like driving on a rumble strip when you hit 40 mph!

Also ... Skoda expect me to buy a pair of axle stands and mess on rotating tyres every 2 months ..... utter madness!

I've had two sets of Eagle F1's ruined after 3000 miles when fitted to my vRS.

Both on the rear, and had the geometry checked and put to the correct Skoda figures after the first pair were ruined.

3 months later a second pair went the same way with sawtoothing on the inside edges.

So, geometry and tyre pressure made no difference.

It seems my vRS just doesn't like F1's.

Now has some cheap things on as I aint putting any more decent rubber on it, and more importantly it goes back in 7 weeks. (company car)

I had sawtoothing on front and rear of my octy sport,Dunlops, after approx 8K. Went back to dealer, and was checked with an Audi alignment rig. From what I can remember, everything was out of tolerance. I had not hit any kerbs etc. etc.

My dealer was excellent, and between Skoda and themselves conjured up a brand new set of tyres, at their expense ! I opted for Conti Sport Contacts.

The rears lasted about 20K before sawtoothing, with normal wear on the fronts. I replaced them with another set of Contis, same wear.

Saw some F1s, when I came to replace again - pretty cool tread pattern - Bad move ! After only 8K, really bad rear inner sawtoothing. All settings checked, and in tolerance. The tyres were sent back to Goodyear, by the tyre company, and I received a credit against them. Apparently the sawtoothing on the rear with the F1s was also found in Mercs and Audis, so my tyre fitter said, hence the refund.

I replaced the F1 with Contis, and didn't have any more problems, the car being Px'd for the new Fl Vrs, which came with Contis.

One interesting note is that when I looked at the new cars at the dealers, whilst waiting for mine, every one of the new Octys had different tyres. Contis, Michelin, Dunlops and Bridgestone. emoticon-0125-mmm.gif

An excellent thread for advice on tyre noise...even with a bit of bitchiness thrown in for good measure.  Also suffering from the aforesaid sawtoothing on my Superb Combi which don't feel so superb at the moment,....what a horrible noise. Gonna switch rears to fronts and see if it goes away or even redevelops!

1. throw away the tyres that are shagged and get some new ones.

2. get your alignment right.

Voila.

There is quite a bit of advice on another thread ( tyre rotation ) about why it is not safe to rotate tyres from left to right only front to rear or rear to front, basically it seriously increases the chance of a blowout due to the tyres adapting to the the rotational direction.

To address the OP, never seen the problem but I am careful about pressure and alignment.
