1.9tdi DualMassFlywheel?

Recommended Posts

I've been reading up, and it seems that my dual mass flywheel is on the way out. Firstly how bad can they get before they actually break and damage something? At the moment you can feeling jolt when you let off the accelerator, slight juddering as you drive along at about 2200rpm in 2nd,3rd & 4th and there's lots of rattling noise at idle. There is no slippage in the clutch though.

I'm keen to get it changed before it it too late. I've read a lot of people recommending a single mass conversion, with a performance clutch, i'm not too bother about that as it has standatd power and i'm not planning on remapping it. But I'm struggling to find anywhere online that sells either a single or dual mass with a clutch kit. I have read that a typical dealer price can be around £800 to done.

The car is a 2001 Fabia 1.9tdi pd100 (Engine Code ATD) with a 5spd box

Can anyone shed any light on the matter or help?

Thanks.

Hi

I am going down the route of the SMF ECS kit when mine goes completely

It makes a bit of noise under load , but not too bad

http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/product.php?xProd=10682&xSec=301

That is the one I am having with the extra heavy flywheel

I dont think they break as such , but can cause alot of noise and vibration

Cheers for that Sarah. What's the pros / cons of the heavier flywheel? Also do you keep these in stock, and do you have a fitted price?

So is it the heaviers flywheel that caused the louder noise or the lighter one.

Do they do one for a 6sp vag.

Lighter ones = noisier. Mine weighs just 4kg'ish. It does rattle a wee bit. :D But then I will never have to worry about DMF issues, and a superlight flywheel helps with engine spool-up (as the engine spins up the flywheel to turn the gearbox, so is extra load to get moving :))

What other SMF's fit the Fabia VRS'? I'm struggling to find a new DMF for a good price so really considering going down the SMF route?

Whats the pro's and con's to doing it? My cars a daily after all

Pros - SMF will never break down like a DMF will. Pedal feel is not affected by the flywheel. You will need a specific 5 speed 02J? flywheel though! Sarah's link above is an ideal one.

Cons - Rattle in neutral with clutch pedal let out, if too light. I just keep my clutch pedal down as is rarely for longer than 30 seconds or so.

That ones a bit too pricey for me sadly :(

Any others from another VAG that could be had over the counter? Or do they need to be lightened?

Editing this

It says it can only handly 275lb ft or something? Also will it work with a Fabia VRS Specific clutch or does it have to be a clutch for the flywheel?

well the pro are really as above....The DMF has a limited life and probably needs replacing when the clutch does. But is smoother and quiter than a SMF. The SMF will see out the life of the car in normal circumstances. I might get a SMF kit but I'm unsure as whether all that rattling will shorten the gearbox life.

bahhh to late reply....

vw do one straight from the dealership as do skoda I think.

I need a new clutch and it's doing my head in trying to source a new DMF for a good price, phoned AVS who run VW Spares website and they have removed the stock of sachs stuff cos they are having a supply problem

How does an SMF conversion work with a 6 speed? What other Flywheels fit? Do i need a petrol clutch or a fabia VRS specific clutch?

I have a vague memory of people on TDIclub talking about using a VW G60 SMF clutch setup on the 5 speed TDIs. The single mass flywheel from a Fabia 1.9 SDI might fit straight on, but not sure on compatability with the clutch plates.

I'm running the jabbasport SMF conversion kit with the Sachs clutch and had no problems. Its one of the first slightly heavier flywheels I have - its about 6kg instead of 4kg & chatter's less at tickover! :)

I did this set up to my cupra turbo!

O2a flywheel from a golf gti 16v and a golf vr6 clutch wot u can get from ces for £100!

I did this conversion to the cupra less than £300 fitted! And the cupra was running 207bhp and 275ft/lb!

My mate I think has 2 02aflywheels in his shed! I can ask him if he fancy selling 1!

interesting read this, [regarding a vrs 6spd kit] what sort of power can a SMF setup handle? std power? [so is therefore basically the same as DMF setup but is without the associated problems?] and is it only the sachs kit that is therefore the ''uprated'' version?

just curious emoticon-0100-smile.gif

smf kits can handle upto 450lb-ft torque possibly more

they are the DADDYS!!!

BUT only necessary IF you have in excess of 200+ bhp!!

To Juego! that one posted is for a fabia tdi 5 speed 100bhp, as you have a vrs you need the 6 speed clutch kit and smf if thats what you want, and if you think 300 quid is dear your in la la land! my helix clutch and smf was £830 and that was 2 years ago!! :o

You can get a cheap oem clutch and flywheel for around 280 quid

TBH my oem dmf is rattling itself to death, has been for around 30k / 2 years, still running fine at over 220bhp :8 never slips, never fails, im hoping its turning itself into a smf :p

I had a look at the cost of a DMF for mine after reading on here about them failing, and panicking myself about it. According to TPS (VW's trade outlet to independent garages), that DMF is only available as a service-exchange from them (they don't do the clutch kit for that model), at just over £100 + VAT (the clutch is slightly more again). Don't know if that's any help?

Another question.

Are all ATD engines and clutch/flywheels the same across all of VW Audi Skoda Seats?

Do believe so yes , as long as the engines sit in the same way

Helix set up for the 6 speed is approx £758 + VAT

So yes , when taken in to account dealers want approx £550 ish + VAT then the Helix set up is not THAT far off OEM prices
