Size of 'Full Sized Spare'

Featured Replies

Took delivery of my Black Magic vRS yesterday - 'nuf said.

Was examining in minute detail tonight. I took the 'Full Sized Spare Wheel' option.

As you'll be aware it comes with 225/40 R18" wheels (Continentals in my case - for those who like these things).

The full size spare is a 205/55 R16 Bridgestone - the same rolling radius I'd guess but is it normal to have an 'odd' spare?

Would someone check their boot!

Thanks

I've got a full size spare in my pre FL octy estate, same as yours 205/55 R16

It's normal, still better than one of those horrible space savers I've had in previous cars...

Thanks.

I thought as much, but just wanted to make sure.

I may be wrong but I thought there was no such thing as a full sized spare for the VRS. They are all classed as space savers because they are not the same width as the VRS wheel. Hence when you fit it you should still restrict your speed to 50mphish.

Up to recently, you could in fact specify a full sized spare for the VRs and it would come with a full sized 16" spare I believe. However, there is only a space saver option now in the catalogue for the Vrs and some other models as well. This is probably feeding thru to dealers in the cars being delivered about now.

the rolling radius of a 225/40R18 is the same as the rolling radius of 205/55R16. an 18" zenith lloy should fit straight in there if you wanted to change it

The 50mph (or is it kmph?) 'requirement' on the full sized 16" spare is just another big a** cover!

The reason for the 'recommendation' is because you are not likely to check the spare as often as the road wheels and it may be underinflated and not so safe to drive on, so to cover themselves, Skoda recommend not exceeding 50mph so there is less likelyhood of you being able to sue them if you had an accident while using your spare.

Checked regularly, its as good as the rest!

Thanks, I thought as much, it is a 'proper tyre' and aside from potential handling differences because of the taller side wall and narrower tread I couldn't imagine why one shouldn't travel at 70 on the motorway with it on the back.

Differences in profile, pressure and width will result in a small level of instability, especially dangerous during emergency brakes.

The standard 18" wheel is too thick to allow the boot floor to close down on top of it. Thats why they fit a 16" spare

i was refering to the diameter of the wheel fitting in the well. to e truthfully honest i didnt think about the thickness of the tyre although you could lookinto sticking a 205 on a zenith alloy

The rolling diameter of most OEM wheels is near enough the same . ( otherwise Skoda would need need different gearbox ratios for each wheel / tyre ! ) . The big problem in squeezing in some of the ultra low profile tyres is the width . The largest width to go comfortably in the wheel well is about 205 or 215 section .

I ordered a spare wheel with my 2010 Octavia and was supllied with a 195/65/15 tyre . As the car has 205/60/15 fitted a better match would have been a 205/55/16 wheel/tyre . Maybe Skoda have excess stock of some tyre/ wheel combos ?

I am sure there is at least one member on here who has a full sized alloy (with tyre) as a spare and they reported it fitted fine with the boot floor being flush. So it may be possible. In the old Mk 1 you used to get a proper alloy with normal tyre as a spare wheel, which was great since you could get a puncture fixed when convienent etc.

That member would be me.......and I can confirm 100% that a full size 18" wheel with 225/40 tyre fits perfectly into the wheel well with no intrusion at all and allows the boot floor to remain completely flat. The reason Skoda only provided a steel wheel is purely cost saving and the reason they now provide an inflation kit now, is cost savings on a cost saving !!!!! Please see this post:

Isn't a full sized spare more desirable than a SKINNY spare...

I thought that was what the distinction between full and not full sized was
