Skoda Superb DX Satellite Navigation

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have just purchased a 2006 Skoda Superb 2.5 V6 TDI Elegance which comes with the DX Satellite Navigation System.

I am wondering whether it would be possible to upgrade this system to the new Skoda Columbus (Colombus?) touch screen Satellite Navigation System? If the answer to this is yes, then I would also like answers to the following additional points please:

  • Is the procedure a direct swap over utlilising the existing cabliing and antenne unit?
  • Would the dashboard (maxi dot?) display on the dash still work with the satellite navigation system?
  • Would the steering wheel controls still work with the new system?
  • Is the colombus unit the same physical size as the DX system?

and finally...

Has anybody on this forum actually undertaken this upgrade and are there any photographs and information that they would be willing to share with me?

Thank you in advance,

Matthew

Can anybody advise please?

Thanks

I guess anything is possible, but I think the easy answer to all your questions is 'No'.

No, completly different fit.

Is there a 3rd party unit that can be fitted that maintains all the standard functionality? I.E.- Compatible with Skoda Maxidot, CD Multiplayer, steering wheel buttons, etc..... ?

Not that i know of...i didnt fancy a windscreen based sat nav when i purchased my superb...so i opted for the Blaupunkt Rome 55. Although the steering controls are rendered useless when the original radio was removed, i could if i wanted use a Blaupunkt accessory that would enable to use the radio with the controls discreetly screwed onto the steering wheel...and the nice thing about my sat nav, is that it is a lot more secure being a din sized unit, also it plays standard cds, and also its an mp3 player when tracked are burned onto a standard cd.It also has outputs for an amplifier which one could hook up to a subwoofer....but i'm too old in the tooth for that, as the sound system on the blaupunkt is in my opinion much better than the standard radio previously fitted.

You can even fit an accessory that enables you to use a mobile phone and all the functions are useable via the remote control fitted to the steering wheel...but thats just an option. Hope this clarifies some ideas on what to have....by the way....the sat nav i bought off ebat or flabay as some call it cost me £70....which compared to main dealer price of around 1300 quid or cheaper if 2nd hand is still good value....although i do like the double din sat nav fitment...but in my case....i wasnt prepared to pay the asking price.kind regards....andy

Forgot to mention, i also have a Blaupunkt FREESTYLER sat nav in my truck...same basic functions as the Rome 55 but without the mp3 facility....but still plays cds.....has a radio with rds....and of course the navigation...and i got that off fleabay and not flabay as previously mentioned :giggle: ......these units need no speed pulse and connect up directly off the iso plugs. Type in the destination....and all the sound comes through the speakers (front) and very clear and precise. And is very accurate...but alas they are not made any more...but good ones still exist and good value.

Hi the sat nav system you have at present is specifically designed for your model of superb....the newer columbus will not fit due to its slightly angled shape. As for the other points you asked...personally i dont think any of the items would work with your present superb.....i would think the columbus sat nav has possibly a different set up internally in order to comunicate with the maxi dot...and that would also have to be changed . Basically the columbus fits the newer models and of course the wiring as other bits would have been added in order to make it work. So basically unless you are prepared to reshape the console to make the columbus fit....and redo the wiring ie canbus and what ever other items are needed, i think the answer is a deffinite no if you think its a straight fit.....but then again i dont know of anyone on this forum who has done the swap from old to new....regards andy

You can get one that does fit strait in and works with everything from ebay just check the info that comes with the postings, you may also need a fascia surround also available on ebay, and an Ariel connector

Something like this

Hmmm, I'm wary of this. It seems to me that there is a bit of a rash of these on the web, here's one for £189.00

SatNav

These units will lose the maxidot integration though. That much is certain, you may however depending on the unit still be able to use the steering wheel controls.

Best solution imho is what I did when I had the Superb. Keep the Excellent sound system with the factory fit DX and go for a TomTom / Garmin with a decent mount. The DX is mounted a little low to be looking down to confirm directions if you lose the maxidot nav input. But that is just my opinion of course.

Yeah i just looked at the sat nav fred bloggs showed via the link........looks cheap and problematic.....and of course a warranty would be a pain to claim on being despatched from china.!! But thats my opinion...at the end of the day you get what you pay for, and in my case i didnt want something stuck on windscreen with power leads dangling over other controls like the radio and basically advertising the screen mounted nav to be nicked at a later date. Which is why i went for the single din blaupunkt rome...ok the steering wheel controls are rendered non useable, but skoda dont do an interface to use the steering wheel controls, but that is a minor issue, but all in all its an excellent sat nav and the head unit can be removed for added security in seconds. Of course there are other single din sat navs about but each to their own...i just decided to go for Blaupunkt .

As above, there is no alternative to the standard Skoda DX satnav if you wish to keep your maxidot and steering wheel remote funtionality.

No i quite agree...the double din skoda sat nav does look rather nice where its situated....but as always....its the price....1200 quid from dealer or cheaper on fleabay...providing it works !! I simply wasnt prepared to pay that kind of money...hence going for the cheap option....and as they say.....the dearest isnt always the best

Bought my DX unit off eBay a long time ago for around £300 delivered, wired in myself, knew I would loose the Maxidot display for the stereo and my steering wheel controls but as it's a Comfort Spec this was to be expected. On the plus side I don't have something that I have to stick on my window and remove all the time and I am not fussed about the display and the controls...........

Hi a little bit off topic but does anybody know if there is an after market DVD update available for the Skoda DX system? I found a supplier online which I thought would work but when I put the disc in it displayed a message that the disc was incompatible with the DX system (it was an RNS disc?).

I have been quoted £125 by Skoda for an up to date DVD but that seems too much to me.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

they do come up on ebay - I bought a 2010/2011 disc for about £65. Pretty good as the old 2005 disc then sold for about £35 - so cost to change wasn't too bad.

For example this one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bosch-Tele-Atlas-Navi-CD-for-Mercedes-DX-APS-UK-N-Ireland-Europe-2009-10-/321001237536?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item4abd2a2c20#ht_500wt_1220

Don't be tempted to get a copy disc - they are copy protected (which can just about be overcome I gather), but the quality of mastering you get from a copy disc is much worse than a factory pressed disc, which means the reading mechanism has to work much harder and can ultimately cause premature wear.

I bought mine on amazon for £118, I haven't had chance to try it out yet because my gps antenna is broken!

I bought a Seat navigation system as I though my Skoda one was broken. Turns out it wasn't broken - just pilot error! I now have a VAG DX unit sitting on my desk gathering dust. It needs recoding, so I'll probably stump up for that and then sell the unit for £150 if anyone's interested. Without coding it'd be £100.

Holy thread revival!

Lol

Di you have pictures and model no. Pls?

Pm'd you.

You can buy update discs, they are CD's and not DVD's. Each CD contains one country only, and comes with another CD that has the major roads of europe. The UK DX version for 2012-2013 is available to buy, the disc is copy protected and this protection is expected by the DX navigation system which will check for its presence, and it will reject any copied discs as a result. Each CD contains data provided by Tomtom, and retails for £125. The discs on this link http://www.bluespot.co.uk/shop-online.aspx/blaupunkt-dx-map are compatible.
