panel filters

Featured Replies

ive just had my car remapped and ive been told that i would benifit from a new panel filter, k & n is more expensive than pipercross is that because its better?

thanks!

Also have a look at the Green Panel filters.

K & N are good provided you do not over oil them, if you do then say goodbye to the MAF.

has anyone proved a performance increase with these panel filters or is it a load of tosh and are we better off changing the paper filter every year instead?

what i do know is these filters DO NOT filter the incoming air to the same degree as the oe filter - this was shown somewhere on k&n's website

just use a paper filter every year

Performance gains if any are minimal, but they will flow more air, improve induction noise, and best of all you can wash and clean them and refit, you cant do that with a paper filter.

but whats the point when they cost 4x as much as paper ones (not even counting cost of new filter oil), and also let more crap into your engine possibly damaging it ???

http://www.knfilters.com/filtercharger.htm

Cant find any bit saying that they don't filter the air.Plus to get the same constant air flow you would need to change your standard paper filter evry 2-3k miles.

check here - i'm not saying they dont filter, of course they do!

what I am saying is it will let more dust etc enter the engine - their own figure show this

secondly what benefit is a higher flowrate if it isn't going to give more bhp?

not meaning to be argueing here just wanting to truthfully know what the benfit of these is over oem because to me they just seem awefully well marketed products that have no real life benenfits.

If the same filter in the 225 BAM engines and the R32 do just fine then I think it is perfectly ok for a remapped AUQ engine. all you need to do is let more air in to the box.

on another note tho, why is it that a CAI kit makes you either loose or get no extra BHP and deff looses torque? I dont get how allowing more air in makes the figures go down?

ive had both pipercross and k&n all be it on different cars, i lost 5 bhp running the pipercross when rolling roaded. k&n all the way for me

what if the air is not cold but warm instead= power loss

lol, yea but thats only on the filter, I am talking about the CAI kit that goes into the wing/bumper. Its just as cold there as it is where the std box air comes in.

I have no RR to show but I know that with the std map and the CAI the car didnt pull as hard nor with the generic maps Ive had since. I hade the RS Tuning custom mape done with the CAI and it got 226bhp and 260 lb ft but now I have had a TIP on and a 2.5" DP done so could of gone up a tad, I have since put the std box back on and only removed the MAF Funnel part and it is just as fast and Id say it pulls harder. Doesnt sound as good tho.

I was going to get a PiperX filter as Ide seen on here that someone had sucked the middle out of the std one? but I not gonna bother now, just need to sort out another small air intake to let a small amout more air into the box.

I have had the ABD CAI on for some time now and think it does a good job. It is better then a standard paper element for sure, well on my mapped car anyway.

I will be refitting my de finned airbox and green panel filter back on this weekend and will be routing a cold air pipe from airbox to bumper grill and see what i think of perfomance. I have a JKM RR day results of car with ABD CAI so will be getting RR with airbox refitted.

You dont get any more noise with a panel filter. Used K&N on a number of cars and to be honest I have not found they work any better than a paper filter. I think you either go all the way with CAI or leave the box as it is. Its also very easy to over oil the k&n.

I had heard that the K&N filters could be over oiled from new and cause damage to the MAF, hence I went with a Pipercrosss.

It hasn't added any more power, or if it has it is hardly noticeable, as all it does is allows the engine to draw more air than a standard paper filter, if it needs it. So with a standard engine, it will do very little. However if you then enhance the engine further to draw more fuel, it won't be struggling to call for more air to produce the correct mix.

Also, as people have said they are washable, so you don't have to replace them all the time. If you take it in for a service, don't forget to tell the garage!

Depends on what car you have tried the panel filter on. Some turbo cars get better gains than none turbo cars. A K&N panel on a 1.8 T Octy does give slightly more noise certainly through the rev range. And more noise should a none standard DV fitted.

Also keep hearing of over oiling K&N panel filter, most folks that say this are probably from the Scooby forums with ITG panel filter experience. Even that is not completley founded data. The K&N comes pre oiled why would anyone want to put more oil on unless the filter has been cleaned and re dressed with oil

Hi like above statement i think a lot of missconception exists on this over oiled statement. ok spraying loads on is not good but who can comfirm a oiled panel filter caused MAF damage on there Octy. I would love to be proved wrong....
