Wiper arm removal

Featured Replies

Couldn't budge either arm off the spindles :dull:

Is there a trick/knack to removing the wiper arms or do I need to buy a puller? thanks

I destroyed a puller, but they came off in the end

Nightmare tbh.

Others just slip them off ??

A bit of wd40 or release oil does the trick

Thanks, but already tried WD40 and 3 in 1 release oil, any other little tricks?

Thanks for that, I'll have a shop around for one of them

This is what I use: http://www.sealey.co...productid=11869

It's absolutely superb, and makes the job super easy. Fits front and rear arms perfectly. Useful thing to have in the toolbox....

That does look much better than the toss I bought

For the record, I soaked mine in wd40 over night and they still didn't budge

I just did a lot of wiggling and they eventually came off.

On the base point, wiper arms are located on the spindles by tapered splines so they always do lock down pretty tight.

I've never needed anything more than a fairly sharp-tipped screwdriver to break the taper though. Loosen the locknut 2 turns, put the screwdriver under the arm, between the arm and the bast of the spindle if possible, then twist!

If you do need something more, then please use a proper dismantling lubricant such as PlusGas, not Water Dispersant (formulation) 40!

As with Ken. However, I found mind a bit hard to get off :giggle:, but once I had had them off once I put a bit of copper-slip stuff on and have never had a problem since.

I would suggesting greasing the linkage while your under the scuttle panel as they can and do fail.... generally when you need them most. Initial signs are a slow and juddery moving (sometimes on one stroke more than the other). I had to get a load-loader home when mine failed  On a plus note the company were paying me 40p/mile

Just remove a circlip from the top and they should come apart (mark/note positions of the linkage for reassembly....)

I have the same tool. Like all well designed tools, you know it's going to work as soon as you start using it.

You can get one for less than £13 (inc P&P) from http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sealey-VS807-Wiper-Arm-Puller-Heavy-Duty-/140409796110?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item20b113760e

Never needed a puller yet. Soak them with WD40, loosen nut a few turns and then move the arm in to the upright position, lifted off the screen and then rock the arm from side to side using it like a lever. The taper always releases, but sometimes it takes a while.

Bought a 3 piece puller set from Toolstation in the end - http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Automotive/Mechanics+Tools/Gear+Puller+Set+3+Piece/d60/sd180/p79243

The smallest puller removed them with relative ease, although I did have to wind the centre spindle down fairly tight before they popped off the spindles.

Removed, cleaned and greased all pivot points on the wiper linkage while I was at it.

Greased the spindles before refitting the wiper arms, so hopefully they might come off easier next time

Scuttle area is now clean and free of leaves and mud,so all in all well worth doing

Thanks guys. Qty 1 ordered. (My arms came off relatively easily & have now been lightly Coppaslip'd but that tool looks just too useful to miss)

Don't forget to unscrew the rear edges of the front wheel arch liners, all the leaves that get under the scuttle slide down behind the liners and turn into compost. You'll be shocked at what you find behind there! :o
