So that sponge effect is normal throughout the vrs range then, lol.

Uprated brakes are a must. I thought my days of modding were over. Just can't resist. You can't beat massive discs behind your front wheels though. One of my previous cars:

And as standard in this next pic, these brakes were awesome. Sorry to hijack this thread:

Nice,

The sponge effect I think its normal..! I test drove some other vRS's when looking for one and they all seem to have the 'uhoh.. time to stamp harder..harder..' attitude.. They bite well and nothing slips but its a bit weary when I heel-toe my brake pedal is about ~2+cm further down than the throttle..! suppose its getting used to it but I had rare moments when i hit the throttle too early because the brakes were to far down and clutch was still in gear.. :S

Another response from the ebay seller...

All we know is that these came off my sons 130 BHP Bora SE - hope this is helpfull

So does anyone know if these are 312mm or 288mm ?

I'd say 288mm (identical to the calipers you have on now!), see this and this. They seem to use the same part no and are both 288mm!

Edited to add that they do look like 312mms in that upgrade link. Prehaps the sellers son upgraded his Bora to 312mms :S

Is £235 all in sound good? New Disc/pads are EBC and New OEM ATE Calipers , carriers.:thumbdown: :S

i dont think theres much wrong with EBC, my track car runs them and i have no complaints but i fancy some grooved discs

so gonna get these: click

and either some EBC redstuff or mintex pads.

Nice, I had a look on ebay.. what do you think of these as an alternative? Ok it may not have as much grooves but its not far off

i like the dimple and grooved ones, they look really nice.

i ended up ordering CRN 40 grooved discs and pagid pads, got told the discs will go through pads very fast but i'm not bothered about that.

looks like a nice set up to me, should be better than a standard set up but if you want a really good one you'd have to spend a lot more on discs and pads.

# Drilled discs

# A common misconception is that the purpose of drilled discs is to promote cooling. This couldn't be further from the truth, The real purpose is to reduce weight.

# Drilling can allow brake dust and gases to escape, but with modern brake pads, this usually isn't a problem. Choosing a drilled disc for that purpose doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

# Many high performance cars like Porsche and Mercedes AMG come with drilled discs from the factory. For these cars, the drilling is mainly about the looks, just like bright red calipers. When people do serious high-performance driving on a trackdays, they usually swap to regular plain discs.

# Drilled discs generally wear out brake pads faster and produce much more brake dust as a result.

# Drilled discs have a shorter service-life than plain discs and tend to develop stress fissures/cracks over their lifetime

Grooved Discs

# Grooved Discs are great for shedding water and mud off the rotor surface as in Rally racing or wet-weather racing. For street driving they may make a marginal improvement in initial brake "bite"

# Grooved Discs do accelerate pad wear and produce more dust just like drilled discs do. They also add noise and vibration into the system. For many these issues are annoying enough to not choose grooved discs, unless you do alot of rallying!

Seems standard discs is the way to go me thinks

got to agree i had drilled and groved disc's on my Vectra Gsi 2.5 V6 with green stuff pads when i bought it they produced loads of dust squealed like a bitch all the god dam time unless they where hot then they wherent that good i put OE pads in still loads of dust but less squeal but as said above they had fractures on them within 8k miles and 12 months and that was just town driveing no raceing ect apart from the odd blast ive just put OE pads from skoda in my vrs that is remaped and took it around the nurburgring never faded once they where spot on but i would like to do the 312 upgrade for peace of mind and looks.

I agree with Static and Si, plain discs all the way. Got mine from GSF for £80 which are OEM spec and made by Brembo rather than some unknown make off ebay

The thing is I keep hearing/seeing mixed reviews about grooved and dimpled.. I see the majority agrees that drilled is bad due to weakened structure etc. hence the link is for dimpled and grooved..

Anyway, more ebay hunting found this:

Std set of Mintex discs and pads for £71.99.

you cant go wrong with mintex, they are pretty good brakes and dont cost the earth either.

i just went for the grooved ones as i liked the look, i dont expect them to perform amazingly, i think they are EBC discs that have been machined by CRN going by reviews i've read.

EBC discs arent too bad, its the greenstuff pads that are a waste of time.

I found a set of 312's in the classifieds on edition38....... Soooo what do i win?

Yummy

on a separate note keith i need some stickers doing braaa and my iphone lost your number too( kinda explains why i've not been bugging you for a bit eh :smirk:)

will send you a text just now, i should still have your number i think.

out of interest, what discs and pads did you run on the vrs?

knowing you they'd probably be expensive ones lol

Oem tt disks with ferrodo ds2500 pads and dot 5.1 race fluid, with that setup any fabia vrs will have more stopping power than it will ever need

Hiya guys,

I have got all my bits fro 312mm conversion on the front and 256mm for the rear. All bits come from Mk1 Octy, so straight swap + discs and pads.

My question is, would I have to change the wheel hubs as well? All around? I have read on golf forum that is would be necessary. Is this info correct? If so,

what are the parts I'd need exatly to carry out wheel hub change? I drive 2001 Octy TDI 110.

Thanks guys

Yep you need to change the hubs, i've never done a set on a non vrs so don't want to guess the exact list of parts needed.
