Stopping power

Featured Replies

Have any of you track using nutters measured the stopping distances of an RS, say from 70mph? Was discussing this the other day and wondering just how big the difference is with the Highway Code numbers :D Particularly interested in figures for RS with stock brakes, but any Octavia would do!

Zooty,

With the new DS2500 I stop a lot quicker, but it's still not fast enough. Might be the weight of the car but I do not feel the car is stopping me fast enough. Maybe as I can;t find anything else to nit pick over stopping is an easy target.

I would be intrested in seeing some figures. The 4x4 and RS have the same basic stopping bits.

I'd like to get some of Jons stats to ooh err, as he has once very very nice set of hand milled discs.

Mine are lovely!

I can safely say that I will outbrake most cars on the road and an awful lot of them on track, as I proved at Bedford at the weekend. The brakes on the RS will be better then those on the other Octavias, due to leverage and disc size (for cooling, swept area is the same). Then there are the pads on mine, at the moment DS3000 and full race fluid. I am happy to try a braking test if anyone can find me an airfield where we can try it out. Maybe the next trackday Colin? I reckno I will outbrake most of you by about 20-30 feet from 80mph. Wannamake it best of 10? :D

Am I mistaken or are the rear brakes a totally different size from the 4X4 to the RS?

I thought RS had TT sized brakes and the 4X4 has Golf brakes, could be wrong on this as I am only going by visual appearance through the wheels.

Richard,

Your right I was really only thinking about the fronts...

I just want a brake upgrade, but about to buy a lathe for my old man so it will have to wait till next year...any suggestions from your portfolio, bearing in mind the 16" wheels will have a 90% chance of staying.

Colin, my brakes will fit yours, remembre that the rRs when initially released in this country had 16" wheels.

Fronts on RS are TT size, 312x25mm

Rears are 256mm

To get them to fit on yours will cost about

John,

[i:98b37043cf]Whack some DS2500s on the rear, some DS3000s on the front, reconfig the brake balance and the ABS kick-in point and you will feel like you are going to go through the windscreen! icon_biggrin.gif[/i:98b37043cf]

That sounds like the ones I'm after.

Could you pm some more juicy details, like phone numbers :)

Colin, you really, really, truely do not want the DS3000s! No disrespect intended, but I have seen you drive and they honestly would not suit you. They do not work when cold, they are very dusty, they squeal worse than that guy out of Deliverance, they eat discs and are generally a very harsh, [b:a4b33ef500][i:a4b33ef500]race[/i:a4b33ef500][/b:a4b33ef500] pad.

Have you changed your pads yet? Try that as a first step, highly recommend the DS2500 pads like I flogged to Ian. Put some decent fluid in, again like I flogged to Ian. Do the front only to start with. If that doesn't give you what you want, next step is some different discs. Go for Group N ones as they have better heat disipation, or if feeling flush get the RS discs and the new calliper carrier (its the bit the front shock fits into and shifts your caliper out) Not recommended for DIY unless you know what you are doing. Don't worry about pads, RS and 4x4 use the same pads. Same again for the rear, group N discs and DS2500 pads, may alter your handling as I believe that the 4x4 uses the rear brakes to control traction.

I also would not recommend altering brake balance and ABS settings unless you [i:a4b33ef500]really[/i:a4b33ef500] know what you want the car to do.

Other alternatives include:

AP racing 4 pots - you will need to change your wheels. Also budget between

John,

I have the 2500's on the front.

I would prob not goto the 3000's

The backs, fair point....wonder how the esp chip is pgm'd, doubt different pgms for different models eg r32, rs4,rs6 others in range.

I tend to brake quite early and slow alot (first track day too when you saw me) or stupidly late, which I know is slower than a racing point stand on brakes lift pause turn approach. Ask Huck he's seen more of my back end than anyone on the Thurs run...

The brembo kit was a considered option if the wheels come off and OZ go on.

Hopefully somthing else will come up, but I do want more stoping power, or at least the knowledge I am stopping well, without compromising the balance...time for the pros. Might be the soft ride throwing my senses.

Do you have shares in Firestone/Dunlop/Bridgestone/Continental etc by any chance :?:

He just likes rubber :- the smell, the touch, burning rubber, skin tight latex :censor:

What makes you think I have shares in them? ;) Just because I get through a set of tyres every 8-10 weeks during the track season?

Actually my car burns more rubber than I do :D Not sure which is the most fun ;)

Here is some figures for the RS regarding it

My friends in local tuning company recommend me as a best solution Porsche GT3 brakes.

Any idea? Price is veryyyy high, but it should be one of the best brakes you can get to your RS.

Jan

Jan, yes the Porsche brakes are very good. One particularly good thing about them is the price and availability of pads, any Porsche dealer will keep them in stock. Are they for road or track? For track use they do eventually crack I believe. If you want some second hand ones, with wheels to match then you should look in the for sale section of this board. **** has some porsche brakes and wheels for sale. Not sure where you are based, he is near Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

Hi TaviaRs!

How can you reconfig the brake balance & Abs kick in point? (more interested

for the ABS kick in). Is there a procedure you find in a Bentley manual?

Is it done with VAGCOM? Where can I find more info about these?

TIA
