High Speed Run

Featured Replies

As some of you may know I do a lot of auditing in Eastern Europe and on the way to Slovakia last week SWMBO (who came along for the holiday) and I took the opportunity to see how fast our 4-year old vRS would go on the flat. The engine is unmodified and the car doesn't have a remap. It is lowered (Eibachs and FSDs) and it's running a Jabba RARB. Anyways - 127mph genuine was what we got on the flat and that was scary enough that SWMBO wouldn't let me try it on a downhill section of the A3 just south of Nuremberg. I'd say it's genuinely possible to cruise at 125mph average in a vRS, but you'd need to be brave as it felt very light at that speed. I was definitely glad of the 312mm brakes when someone pulled out in front of us at about 80mph!

Some piccies of the navigation unit showing the true speed (speedo was showing 140mph-ish)

Excellent! :)

Good man...

would turning the aircon off get you a few mph more?

Sorry must try harder :p

OK, well, we're back in Germany on Monday and we should be lighter on the way home than on the way out (also, I'd literally just tanked up on diesel at that point, so I was about as heavy as it's possible to get) so I'll try again - SWMBO permitting.

Yes, if we closed all the vents and turned off the aircon it probably would go a touch faster. I'll give it a go next week on the way home.

The biggest issue is just getting a couple of miles of clear road to get a run-up.

I did a 155mph (limited) run a few years back in an Audi A4 2.8 Quattro and I was getting flashed by a Merc S class! When he got past I realised why he wanted through as he was getting flashed by a Maserati 3200GT who disappeared off up the road at about 180mph.

Driving on the derestricted sections of the autobahn is very stressful as you constantly have to be looking in the mirrors for the real fast-movers. You can be doing 200kph (124mph) and all of a sudden you'll get the full glare of some S6 or SL600's headlamps which has just had top brake down from anything upto 325kph if they're derestricted.

Top man, managed 134 on the GPS that was as yours but with a Miltek de-cat.

OK - got 132mph but to be honest, the roads on the way back were awful, lots of bumps and potholes and very heavy traffic. I wish I'd thought to do some downhill runs as I reckon 140mph gravity assisted is possible. Also it was hot as hell (28C) so the aircon was left on and the vents were open.

And the thing I'm genuinely proudest of? Well, it did 2438 miles (without missing a beat) on 202l of diesel (44.5 gallons) or 54.8mpg with an indicated average speed of 67mph which I think it truly phenomenal.

Yeah thats a brilliant MPG for that average speed. Isn't it true that the blue motion polo does somethin like 70mpg?

my Ibiza seems to feet fine at those kinds of speeds, and it's basically the same car :S

One things for sure... You'll have blasted all the smoke causing crud out the system!

Bet it was running super sweet the next day? :D:thumbup: Try chucking a squirt of Millers through the next time you try..

The only thing about these kind of speeds I don't like the idea of is having a blow out.. eek!

p.s. loving the HU read out from SATNAV! Get a liquid gauge and you'll have a sweet little set up there!

You obviously have a better car, are a better driver and have bigger balls than I do. Probably better dress sense as well.

Fundamentally the two cars have different body styles, drag co-efficients and have different suspension set-ups. They may even have different sized wheels for all I know. The engine and gearbox are the same, but many other parts are different. Basically, an Ibiza isn't a Fabia and I'm not you. I posted my experience. The fact that your experience (and you don't say where you were doing a sustained 125mph cruise) is different doesn't make my report any less valid. Or my car defective in any way.

In comparison to my TT, our Mercedes C250D Estate or my old Audi A4 2.8 Quattro Avant, the vRS felt right on the limit whereas all those other cars feel much more planted and secure at those speeds.

If you're happy cruising at 125mph in your Ibiza then great, I probably won't be joing you in my Fabia, that's all.

The AC compressor isnt clutched in the fabia so its always running anyway so shouldnt give you much extra.

Get the duck tape out and sort out the panel gaps :giggle:

managed 120 in the Mazda with the roof off yesterday heading for Berchtesgarden from Italy. It did get rather breezy though.

did I say you were wrong and that your "report" was in any way invalid? didn't think so, I was just saying that considering the two cars are actually pretty similar it's odd that the vRS would feel light the Ibiza feels pretty stable. you're right about the suspension as mine's standard but you're wrong about me; I'm a chicken with average driving skills :D
