Quick EGR questions

Hello!

I know this is normal, and that it's come up many times.. (though, normally referring to oil at the bottom of the IC pipe).

Question 1: Is this amount normal?

Question 2: Will a catch can/tank cure this.. or is a tank in the chain after here?

Question 3: If this stuff is here, is it also going around me turbo? The Catch can/tank will defiantly stop it getting that far..won't it?

Question 4: Would you need to tell the insurers about a catch can, surely not?

Taa!

this is not normal it's a result of the tiny oil seal giving up in the EGR, OK if you can live with the mess!! as to the amount of oil-- a catch tank will reduce it ( a good one by about 20ml's /1000 miles but won't stop what the turbo's passing which shouldn't be mutch if in good condition Q4-- I told mine and they didn't want to renew but my broker got me a better deal with another (mmore flexible) company

Oh, for some reason I got it into my head this was normal and "They all do it"..

Can you fix the tiny oil seal or do you have to replace the whole valve..

If a whole new valve, anyone an idea on how much?

Not normal i have a good used egr off an 05 asz engine if u want it pm me

simple and solid solution...disconnect the rubber vacuum on top of the egr and plug the pipe....

then do the elephant hose mod...cut the crankcase breather to turbo intake pipe and plug that..then run some 20mm heater hose from the crankcase breather down the back of the engine and vent to atmosphere..

Is this a DIY replacement job?

I don't have VAGCOM, could it be needed or is it a bolt off bolt on job?

Thanks mate, and I maybe in touch but my motors only done 66k on an 04 plate so will investigate new parts first.. and if I'm to tight.. I'll PM ya :)

Won't that trigger the CEL light.. and also kill the earth? :o

no and what earth?

Ok, so just to clarify..

My EGR seal has gone and one way or another it needs sorting.

Do I need VAGCOM to replace it, or can I just bolt a new one in?

Does the oil mean the valve is allowing recirculation when it shouldn't, I.E. at low power / revs / load.. I've read this can cause rough running?

Thanks

Rob.

no you dont need vagcom to replace...its a bolt off n replace job..

but its only there for emission regulations...remove the hose and plug it...it then wont work and you wont be drawing spent exhaust gases back into the engine....do the hose mod and stop the oil vapoured air also circulating around your air intake system....

do it....nowwwwwwww

STOP IT! lol... :D:giggle:

I'm very mechanically suggestible at the minute.. I did my first ever under the car repair last night! (got my alternator light back on ignition now, woo)

B)

we all started sumtime...its a very good and simple mod to do...egr mod is simple....crankcase breather isnt that difficult...theres a hose from the crankcase that goes to the turbo intake....this pipe needs cut and the turbo intake bit blocked...then hose is connected to the crankcase breather outlet and cable tied down the back of the engine and vented to atmosphere...

I'll look into the mods and do some reading. I like to completely understand what i'm doing when I change OEM configurations. ;)

Whilst this busted EGR valve is on the car though, is it ok to drive?

Where exactly is the oil coming from, the recirculated fumes?

And where is it going? If the valve is operated by a vacuum hose.. is this oil going up the hose to whatever is creating the vacuum.. is that an issue?

it is just not worth trying to repair it a new valve is prob' £150?? disconnecting the vac won't stop the oil flow now and yes you most likely will get a "cel" unless you have an "old" ecu ie: type 15 as it's a staight swop I would try secondhand and then if you're brave look at a "wingnut stealth pipe " job, the existing egr would benefit a clean anyway, DON'T block the holes in the hope of stopping the leak, best of luck

I got qouted £260 fitted by skoda. My EGR valve leaks slightly, looks the exact same as yours! Not worth fixing IMHO. Not loosing enough oil to be worried about.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have disconnected the rubber vacuum hose on top of the egr , blocked off the egr and put a knot in the rubber hose that was connected

Is this right, should i have the old hose knotted , block it completely or leave the hose open.....
