Making 3D TV content

Carrying on from the thread a few months back here), thought I'd stick this up here. I apologise in advance for the corporate spin on some of this, but I found it genuinely quite interesting. :)

Cheers for posting it Xav, definately an interesting watch..

Im still not too enamoured with the whole 3D thing.. seems like a bit of a gimmick really.. although ive not really seen the tech in action apart from Avatar at the cinema... and now every other film is "3d"

I should really try to get down to one of the pubs that shows the games in 3d and check it out

I look forward to seeing this truck on the road. Looks a neat installation.emoticon-0148-yes.gifemoticon-0100-smile.gif

One interesting rumour that keeps coming back, is that SiS having swallowed up Dales and O21, are now casting an eye on Telegneic (and/or Arena depending which way the wind is blowing)

one of the prof.'s at my uni is doing a research on hologram like live/red button video imaging.. specifically for football first (highest revenue). I haven't watched ur clip yet but Im guessing this uses similar techniques of multiple cameras and microphones to pinpoint where the moving objects are etc etc. this tech is going to be streamed via the net too eventually

imo 3D is gimmicky yes but when people pay for the premium its the next stepping stone for hologram like images.. So I suppose i support that.

There are plenty of mics, but they don’t pinpoint anything :( the 12/13 pitch mics pick up the 'kick' and the sound field (surround mic) is usually position up on the gantry of off the front lip of the stadium roof (there are several more mics fitted to cameras and a stereo mic as well).

In one of the clips, you see the second camera on the dolly track sideways as the convergence operator alters the depth of the image. It all looks great with the 3D glasses on, but I personally am not yet convinced that it’s something I would want all the time. I think I would look on it more like a ‘treat’ or ‘special occasion’ sort of thing.

Hmm I might need to have a chat with you guys at some point.

Always good to see a nice new shiny OB trailer.

basically usage of mics, an example would be - 4 ordinary mics an inch apart in a square fashion placed in the middle of the room, it can detect anyone is talking in the room with up to 5 degree (angle) accuracy. Technique used is clever digital processing of sound, a bit like "reverse" surround sound if you get my drift?

Im very interested in this topic and have considered doing this as a job but R&D isn't a me thing unfortunately.. :(

Back down to earth a little... How harsh will it be on your eyes if you constantly watching 3d stuff?? I have alot of trouble focusing with 3d glasses!

I’m afraid we rarely bother with anything other than a SoundField surround mic in telly and it’s only for a background, (3d Grouse mic if you like). I have used Schoeps MSM mics before and they sound pretty good, but we never bother with much accuracy with these things :(

Like everything, your eyes just need training. Once you start doing it more, your eyes will adjust.

Im sure i've read, Fighter Pilots are trained to process completely seperate things with each eye.
