Wheel hub assembly

Featured Replies

Hello .

Just had my Octavia TDI Classic 08 reg. in for front brake pads, Mate done the job but he has stripped the threads where the calipers bolt back onto the hub.

Seems like it has happened to a few others too, I know its the mechanics fault, but would Skoda cover it under warranty as it seems to be a common occurance??

Cheers Kevin

swings and roundabouts as skoda will say hes not a skoda tech that they cant cover the work done by him

Another garage is going to have a look tommorrow.

Says he should be able to put a Hexicoil in, whatever that means??

Your "mate" should have used a torque wrench on the caliper guide pins to avoid stripping the threads. It's a common mistake with DIYers.

If its done properly Helicoils are O.K. However it's vitally important that the coils are put in exactly square to the mounting surfaces & the pitch of the holes is exactly miantained. Unless the garage has some jig or fixture to take care of these issues then there is strong chance that the guide pins will be misaligned and will cause the calipers to bind ,leading to overheating brakes.

You should get your "mate" to fit a good scrap yard hub , at least that way he will remember not to overtighten things and also to find out what the recommended tightening torque is before fitting.

Most VAG front caliper guide pins have a recommended tightening torque of 28Nm ( 21 ft.lb) but check this against your model type..
