Cylinder Misfire & power loss

Featured Replies

Hi all!

I just wanted to share a recent experience with my 1.2HTP 2005. Thing is that I started to have loss of power and "stalls" when idling or adding power in low, and it felt like the car wanted to power off, lol. It will also stumble occasionally in high-RPMs.

I ran VAG diags and came out with these codes:

Address 01: Engine

Controller: 03E 906 033 J

Component: 1,2l/4V SIMOS3 00HS5331

Coding: 00061

Shop #: WSC 13765

2 Faults Found:

16825 - EVAP Emission Control Sys: Incorrect Flow

P0441 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

16687 - Cylinder 3: Misfire Detected

P0303 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Readiness: 0010 0001

I checked the wiki and the forum and the answers were very general and broad, so I contacted the owner of my shop and he told me right away that it was the Ignition Coil. :S

So, I didn't want to take my car to the shop having that issue, reason why I decided to do it my self since It seemed easy. I followed Reece's guide on replacing the spark plugs http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/71734-guide-fabia-12-htp-spark-plugs/ (the Coil Packs are included in that), and Voila! The coil cathode was full of a light-blue/green corrosion which had the spark plug also covered with that rust. I even found a mosquito inside! WTH! :o

I cleaned the coil with WD40 and swabs as a temporary fix so I could go to the stealer's and buy the new coil. I wish I could upload the pictures, but since the site changed I don't have the "attachment" button :( (only insert picture, media, etc. All URLS )

Hope this helps to any1 having a similar issue.

You could have used a can of electrical contact cleaner, and IMO so long as the codes don't come back and it runs fine, I wouldn't worry about buying a new coil.

The owner of my shop has told me that these cars suffer a lot from this, so much that he instantly pointed me on the right track. I think eventually the coil will fail (was manufactured 6 years ago). The thing is, how did water or w/e came inside? I know there's a lot of humidity in my country (90%relative Hum.) but still thats a sealed environment and the heat that it reaches wont give chance to anything to build in there, lol.

My wild guess is that the coil inside is corroded and is "leaking" its corrosion to the spark plug. Anyhow, I will save the "OMG My car is failing" situation in the middle of nowhere and buy the coil which is $35.

Thanks for the advise and quick reply! :D

Just as I suspected, I cleaned the Coil and ran diagnostics. The fault disappeared so I went for a road test and buy the new coil.

The car started to stall like after 5 mins. and the misfire was present again under the engine controller, so I didn't want to wait till get home and replace the part, so I replaced myself the coil right there at the stealer's :p

Car is running perfectly now! NEVER trust a rusted coil pack B)

Cheers!
