What's wrong with my car?

Featured Replies

Hi all...

Had to abandon a trip to Bristol today and come back home as the car is playing up

and I didn't want to end up on the hard shoulder. :(

I sat in LOADS of traffic and I soon became aware of a giinding sort of vibration when decelerating in gear

slowing gradually in the traffic using engine braking... I could easily feel it through the accelerator pedal when it

was happening.

The car pulls as normal although there is a faint noise when accelerating too between 1500 and 1750.

In the end as it seemed to worsen I turned back at Maidenhead and returned home.

It was a clear run going back and once settled in 5th @60-70mph it didn't put a foot wrong until I started

driving in town again.

If I were to hold it steady in say third gear at 1600 rpm it would resonate throughout the entire cabin

until I get to about 1750 and then it fades away and the car pulls strongly as normal.

This seems to be most prevalent when decelerating in gear in normal driving but I can make it do it on demand

by holding it steady in the right rev zone.

I'm praying its bush related, my o/s/f console bush is cracked and was an advisory at the last MOT,

but from some of the stuff I've read on here I also suspect dogbone mount bush....

But it's just a stab in the dark really, I can take it in for the work on monday but I'd like to go in there being

at least fairly certain of the likely problem causing this noise/vibration.

If it is the dog bone is it worth me getting the superpro poly item as a replacement as I don't want to

go through this again in 6 months if the rubber one isn't up to the job. My Fabia is mapped, 297 lb/ft

Let me stress that when above 2000rpm the car is behaving completely normally.

I sat in so much damn traffic that I had plenty of opportunity to pin the fault down to the exact rev range...

Your help would be most appreciated...

Thanks

Flywheel.

hmm might be your DMF or hopefully your bushes :)

Flywheel.

Oh cack... really?

Thanks for the reaplies fellas.

Arent the dmf's replaced at the same time as the clutch

as I'd swear the clutch feels pretty new and I'd rather not do both.

Can anybody tell me what causes this component to fail....

And most importantly.....

What sort of time and dosh is that going to cost to put right...

I am trying to be in two places at once at the moment and I really need the car.

Thanks again....

Garry

Depends. It's usually one bit separating from the other due to stress. If you have the car remapped and your feeding all the power through from 1700 rpm then you are stressing it beyond what is reasonable. Sometimes they just fail. That's life.

You should always do the two together but you may be able to get away depending on if the flywheel has damaged the clutch or not which it usually does. Skoda will charge you about £1500 to sort it. Get it to an indy for an assessment, you may be lucky and it may just be something loose.

Mate of mine went to the gearbox specialist in N Wales. £850 for a new oem clutch and flywheel inc fitting, and they did a top job. It sounds like a flywheel problem to me though, as its between a certain rev range.

The flywheel doesnt like full boost under 2,000rpm, and doesnt like being booted in 6th gear.

UPDATE,

Took the car to my faithful indy (Westside Motors South Woodford.)

this morning, myself and the mechanic had a little test drive and he

reckons it may be the exhaust (he) recently fitted knocking/rubbing

at certain frequencies. Either way, she's on the ramp tomorrow at 08.30

Getting the console bushes done while I'm at it. :D

Just left my job and they had a whip round that will pay for that work to

be done at least.

I probably should have mentioned that the hotter the car is the worse

it sounds, hence it getting worse in 3 hours of heavy traffic on one of the hottest days all year.

Chris (mechanic) says this explains why it doesn't do it as much when cold

as the exhaust is slightly smaller then. He also said I'd feel a fair bit of vibration

on the clutch pedal if the flywheel was working but damaged. There isn't any.

Just the accelerator pedal in the aforementioned rev range.

I had a mark 3 golf some time back with a Remus twin 3" upswept dtm pipe

and that had to be moved 3 times till it was contact free.

Cross your collective Brisky fingers for me folks...

Hopefully it's the Blueflame.

More tomorrow.

Good luck buddy.

It would be a shame if it is your flywheel as your clutch so no signs at all of slipping. Fingers crossed for you.

I've noticed a couple of things with mine while its been hot. If I have the air-con on the clutch pedal feels harder... :S

Looks like it's the dmf folks...

My new oem clutch and dmf arrive tomorrow so I'll be getting it changed soon,,,

I have a price of £225 for fitting.... The clutch and dmf kit came in at £345 inc vat.

Mahoosive thanks to Big Gray of GSF Swinton for hooking me up with that...

Shame really cos as foey said my clutch doesn't slip at all...

He has the opposite problem to me DMF okay but slipping clutch.

I'm replacing both as a precaution anyhow... The thing is, I haven't

ragged the car but I don't know what the previous owners did to it.

Remember it was mapped when I got it. by god knows who???

At least this way I'll know it's full history...

Bad news, sometimes I hate being right.

At least you got a good deal on fitting and parts. I know if the DMF goes in my Saab I won't get change out of £700 just for the parts....
