Problems creating IMAP account on Mac

Featured Replies

I am having trouble setting up a mail account using IMAP on my Mac. Once set up i try to check my mail but keep getting a message about the server timing out on port 143??

I also have the same account set up on my iPhone and it works ok via o2's data network but when i connect my iPhone using wi-fi to my home network i get the same sort of problem as above.

Any ideas??

got a firewall blocking port 143?

got a firewall blocking port 143?

TBH i am not sure.lol

Been into my router settings and there is a "rule" for port forwarding entitled IMAP server. I have applied this rule but its still not having it.

I have my firewall set to allow all incoming traffic at the moment anyway as far as i can see.

That rule is probably to allow you to run your own imap server.

Don't think you need that on.

Try to enable outward imap connections and tell your firewall to keep state on the connections.

Never had a problem like this before and don't really know how to edit the required settings either in the router or in the firewall on my Mac

The IMAP server's not using SSL is it mate? (IMAPS) if it is, it should be 993 not 143

No. I am pretty sure it isn't.

I set the account up on a friends laptop and he has no problem connecting at his house and he uses the same ISP as i do.

You don't have little snitch or similar installed on the mac do you?

No, should i have?

gmail by any chance, this uses non standard ports for getting the email.

I thought Gmail used IMAPS on 993 for mail retrieval ? and TLS / SMTP for sending on 587. I could be wrong because I have not set one up for a while.

Turned out it was a problem with my router. Reset it and all is well. Cheers for the advice guys.
