I'm in two minds

Featured Replies

I know another guy is doing this at the moment, but didn't want to hijack his thread.

I have only a month of manufacturers warranty left on my octy, ABS unit not failed, DSG not failed, air con not failed, rear washer pipe not failed! In fact nothing serious gone wrong with it at all.

So the question is, do I need the extended warranty? or have I just got a good car and shouldn't worry?

I know that the repair cost of these things spirals into scary numbers but if they were going to break wouldn't it have happened already?

2.0FSI DSG, 2007, just under 30k miles,

what would you do?

Oh, and I have just taken it to the west coast of France and back with no problems!

You don't 'need' the extended warranty but it will offer you peace of mind, with the car having such low mileage i would not of expected the ABS or DSG to have given trouble yet (if they ever will).

Personally i would own a DSG out of warranty (actually after driving one i would not own a DSG at all - yet)

The ABS and the AIr Con compressor issues appear to be more time related, i.e. around the three year mark, rather than mileage related.

These were part of the consideration when I changed my car.

With this in mind, at what age and mileage have any of you had the expensive things replaced?

I bought a Skoda 2 years extended warranty for piece of mind, so far had no problems or failures in the 4 years I have owned the car. Trade off between risk of a big bill vs relatively small up front purchase which also includes 2 more years of full Skoda assist, inc full Euro cover.

Pays your money takes your risks

Bought mine via Allums Skoda at much reduce cost vs local dealer - just mention Briskoda for their current deal.

I have just been to the dealers, they have quoted me

12 months warranty £295

24 months warranty £445

12 months breakdown £89

24 months breakdown £145

Although the service guy told me that he had only changed one mechatronic and one ABS unit for as long back as he could remember, the sales guys could think of many more that he must have forgotten about.

Seems a reasonable price to be honest, and there is an offer on quidco for breakdown cover for about £4 after cashback iirc.

what prices has anyone else paid?

What are the conditions for the Skoda warranty, does it still have to be within its original warranty period?

I have the policy booklet here, the dealer gave me it to read through.

Nothing mentioned about the car requiring an existing warranty. I suppose that they could be selling cars off the forecourt that the manufacturers warranty has expired, (and you still get a year warranty on them) so potentially no.

Although from looking at alternative companies online they seem to up their price if your current warranty has expired.

That looks like a good price. I'm sure Warranty Direct charge around £400 to £450 for just one years cover.

Thats about what they are quoting, but their cover does include wear and tear, and without double checking I think breakdown is included also.

It depends on which policy you get from them but prices range from £229 - £455 for a year

The thing putting me off them would be the claims procedure, with Skoda, they have put their name to it, so I can go shout at them (if it ever came to that).

Think I might bite the bullet and plump up the cash for the 2 years from Skoda at £445 without breakdown, I have just got a years AA cover on Quidco for £6.50, not as good as Skoda Assist, but a damn sight cheaper.

I suppose, if one of the things I expect to fail does exactly that, the warranty will have paid for itself immediately and probably 10 times over.

My car is out of warranty today. I've gone for Skoda Assistance for another two years - mainly for the free European cover, as we are off on a road trip next week.

I thought seriously about an extended warranty, but decided that I didn't have a spare £500 and that I was happy to take my chances with the ABS unit issue.

My local dealer wanted £520 for 2 years extended warranty before any haggling, but couldn't supply a leaflet listing what was and wasn't covered!

Couple of points...

Major air-con failure is likely if you have the older type compressor (Valeo/Zexel brand). If you have the newer type (Sanden, fitted from about 2007-) then you should have no major worries. If the Zexel compressor makes a noise when its running then it must be replaced ASAP (spring washer on the swash plate break-up). If the Zexel compressor is merely pumping very poorly (but not noisy) then suspect the N290 control solenoid. This can be replaced easily and cheaply with the compressor in situ.

It is possible on many models to swap a Zexel compressor for a Sanden (mounting points and connections usually the same).

The Continental Teves ABS unit problem can now be sorted for a few hundred by having your old unit rebuilt with a new G201 pressure sensor.

If I had a car with a Sanden compressor (you can check the make by looking at the label on it) then I'd not been too eager to buy an extended warranty.

DSG is another matter though, and I'd not be too keen to run an DSG car out of warranty of some sort...

sounds like a good price, does that include wear and tear ? how does it match up to other companys warrantys ?

I have done it!

Just been to the dealers and bought the 2 year warranty at £445 without breakdown. It is a very good price compared to other online companies, and Skoda have their name on it, which is much more reassuring.

After plenty of reading on the internet about the Continential Teves ABS, the DSG mechatronic unit and the air con pump problems, the general concensus is that they have mostly failed just out of the manufacturers warranty period.

I can afford the warranty, I cant afford the repair of any one of these single items.

Money paid, choice taken!

In a odd sort of way I am kinda hoping that it will go wrong now  but knowing my luck, now that I have the warranty nothing will go wrong with it for the whole 2 years :wonder:

I'm similarly in two minds - I have a slightly older 56 plate car (registered September 06 I think) which I bought second hand a few months ago which is currently covered by a six month after market warranty. The car has only done 21K miles so it's potentially approaching some major headaches with the ESP and aircon, I'm very aware that for any one fault the warranty will pay for itself but at the same time my Seat which I had over the same time wouldn't have been covered for any of its issues so that money would have been a waste.

Admittedly though if I could get two year Skoda warranty for £450 (which seems unlikely) I'd probably go for it as I could stomach that for the peace of mind as it should be less hassle than a separate company for claims.

Rich - what age is your car?

It turns 3 on the 27th of this month.

Sorry - I hadn't noticed you were the OP.

" Would all these faults be covered by the 12 month Skoda Approved Warranty " that comes with the car. It's coming from a main dealer

i went to my local skoda dealer, and they told me it would be £300 for a 1 year warranty, but first they would have to check the car over, and that would cost £80..... not impressed at all with the charge for the check, do all skoda dealers charge for the check first ?

Robert Eardley Skoda Crewe is where I bought this warranty, no check required, for my car at least. Do bear in mind, I did buy the car there and service it there too. They are pretty good there, when you get around Mr Panic the service guy :giggle:, they are good as gold there really.

From the difference in price and what you get it would appear that the extended warranty offered is not the same with every dealer?

I would imagine so, just check the small print carefully BEFORE you sign to accept the car and warranty.

Pre-warranty coverage check is standard practice I believe. The garage where I take mine (Winchester Motor Co) were offering the check FOC at the time I bought my warranty. I imagine that with a bit of arm twisting you could get that £80 down - even perhaps to zero. They will, after all, make a healthy commission on the £300-£350 that you pay for the warranty. :)

My Octavia scout warranty expired in may, have gone for a rolling warranty with warranty direct 30 pounds a month. cancell

anytime. not on their website , give them a ring.
