Basicly i bought a cambelt kit and water pump from gsf as i were goin to do it myself then i was told its not so simple on the vrs so a local garage who i were recomended to said they would fit the kit etc for £160+ vat took it friday when i picked it up the tech said theres a bit of knocking coming from the altenator i think??????????? obviously this was not there before the belt was done he said it would probably dissapear, anyway a week later its still there but only when then engine is warm so me and a pal looked at it last night we took the alt belt off and the noise is still there so that eliminated the aux side of it, took the timing cover partialy off and the new belt has a few frays along the edge and the noise is defiinatly coming from the cambelt area it a bearing related noise but the garage are saying its either the water pump or the tensioner and if i go and get another kit they will fit it at the cost of £160+vat as they dont work for free its doing my head in as i could of had it done a skoda for less than what its cost me now

just wondered if anyone else had experienced problems when they have had the belt changed

they must have fitted something wrong???

why would you not of questioned them when they said there is a noise but dont worry it will go lol what a joke they dont have a clue.

take it to an independant to check the belt etc and if they see something wrong with fitting take pics etc then send the original garage the bill

Mine is giving a similar noise and was only done on monday :'(

Good luck mate, hope you get it sorted.

I have only had my belt done once but will only go to a specialist for the cam belt, I will pay it as its their responsibility then. I wont even supply the parts. just in case. athen they have no chance of saying well you supplied dodgy parts.

I am with Clive here and say the place you went are crap and dont have a clue. when mine was done at first by Skoda in Falmouth there was a slight noise that went away after a few hundred mile or so. I read it is normal with a new belt.

but to find freying is not good Id say.

iirc it was a slight rough noise, dont forget its a hard belt with teeth on that slot into a metalwheel so it needs time to bed in. shouldnt frey tho.

your one done on monday prob just needs some running.

I wonder if it has something to do with not replacing the hydralic part of the tensioner??

Did you have this replaced??

STOO

its a complete Kit.

you should have had the tensioner done too, and the belt. I specified the pump to be done and the skoda place said they do that anyway lol. the pump was ok but weaping a tad at the seal so wouldnt of lasted long.

The kit only comes with the mechanical part of the tensioner, not the hydralic. I found this out after i had it all fitted by my indi garage

OH, Im sure they replaced mine, Ill have a look to see if its on the bill, when I find it lol I have lots of paperwork in a file lol.

Personally Id try fight them some more, if not take it and have it done properly and take it as a learning experience, then slate the place for being CRAP.

good luck

The hydraulic tensioner/damper does not come with the cam belt kit.

As for the noise.....check that the centre cam belt cover has been fitted correctly.

The cover has a small tab on it that locates behind the water pump body.

Bill.

you need to get this sorted asap as a fraid belt will fail rather quickly then you'll have no come back on them as any evidence will be gone.

you need to figure out where the belt is catching. it may well be the cover if it's been fitted incorrectly if so it's there fault not down to a faulty part.

i've done my belt myself twice since onwing the car, easy enought job to do.

no faulty part in the cambelt kit will cause the belt to catch on anything!!

I'm getting mine done next spring by a mate who works for a VAG specialist, I was going to ask he use a new pump with a metal impellor and genuine G12++ coolant but is it worth asking him to change the hydraulic tensioner as well if it doesn't come as part of the cambelt kit?

Bairings can sometimes go when the tention is taken off or the belt is catching on something.

But the big thing here is thay do a TB change and then is a rattle when done and thay say to just drive it LMFAO.

I would have made them redo it there and then with me watching :-).

But as some have sead already take it to a skoda place and have it looked at and have them comfirm is the job was done right.

Better to pay a small sum of cash then have your belt go on you.

If it dose the place that did it will just try blame the parts you gave them and you end up in a tit for tat fight trying to get it sorted.

Errrrrm its not an hydraulic tensioner.....its a spring loaded tensioner with a built in hydraulic damper, and IMO yes it should always be changed when the cam belt is being changed as part of the scheduled maintenance.

Also, to get the water pump out you need to first remove the damper/tensioner in order to get the engine mounting brkt out of the way.....so you might as well stick a new one in.

HTH

Bill.
