fun wheel bearings not fun...

Featured Replies

hi ,

can you change a front wheel bearing you self on a 2000 felicia fun pick up ?? can someone help out here,,, i was told yeah it can be done no problem !! but there is a problem , i cant get the old bearing out .........................................

you need a big heavy duty pair of snap ring pliers to take the snap ring out, the bearing is press fitted but it is possible to remove the bearing using a large bench vice if you have some bits and bobs the right size to apply pressure in the right place..

often when you press the bearing out one of the inner bearing races will remain stuck to the hub flange, in which case you will need a knife-edge bearing seperator to remove it

cheers mate thanks for the help , ill step away from the big hammer and have a little rethink !!

Or an angle grinder and some care.

I really would not recommend the angle grinder or the vice, a home made press is really simple to make it only cost me 10 euro for a 4 tone hydrolic jack, the steel I had running around, you can also buy a relatively inexpensive tool to remove the inner race,if you choose otherwise take it slow with the grinder to be sure not to hit the hub,and when you press the new bearing in, make sure the pressure is on the outer race.

If you're careful with a grinder you can get a stuck inner race off without any damage at all - you can get the metal nice and thin and then just crack it off, plus the heat of the grinding usually frees things up a lot anyway. I've never bothered with a knifeedge puller to do one.

yeah i must admit, they aren't nomally that bad on the skoda's, but on the likes of transit vans and the renault master vans it can be an absolute pig to change the front wheel bearings, mainly because the brake disc is bolted to the inner edge of the flange which means you need to press the flange out with the disc still attached.. utter madness...

annywho, it's probably better off just taking your wheel hub down to a local garage to just change the bearing
