elephant hose mod

Featured Replies

i read through the guides and i understand what it does and how it must help keep everything cleaner with an open mind i bought a hose and 22mm end pipe to bung the intake and vent the hot oil vapour to under the car with it fitted i then covered approx 100 miles in 2 days to test it fully. now as i said i was open minded so my findings

boost was down from 26psi to 20psi? (I drove at night when it was cooler as well so it wasnt the outside temp bringing that down)

smoke out the back was increased slightly

MPG was the same as before

i wasnt expecting any power increase but it felt less powerfull the whole time this mod was on so i removed it today and took it for a drive and it is now back to normal boosting to 26psi? i followed the guide to the letter so no idea why i expereinced power loss but it wont be going back on.

umm, what it does is that it does not reuses exhaust air thus does not clog up your mani with soot or have any oil leaks. I felt the car has less umph when not fully booted from the get go. which is apparently normal because it has not for any reused gas to feed thro and I guess the psi will be slightly lower because of this.. When fully booted from the get go it will be the same as original (apparently) as the egr valve is closed.

I suppose if one remaps it it will become normal/better..? :)

ffs just did this mod today... will drive it tomorrow and if its down on power/boost its coming off...

english plz...

p.s egr mod and ccv (elephant hose) mod are two different things.

Anyone have any idea/theory why the OP lost boost with this mod???!! Cheers.

haha! sorry, had a few last night! ignore my post, I was talking about the egr delete (I did it both at the same time you see..) :giggle:

This is why I'm going with a catch can, it just doesn't feel right to be disconnecting and blocking off.

Not sure what's going on with the OP though, maybe a tiny leak on the cap?

Hmm yeh. My only (wild) theory is that when the ccv vent to air intake is blocked off it reduces the amount of air going into the intake (obviously).

But the air intake system does not draw in any more air to compensate as the flap that controls how much air goes into the engine/intake system does not change/ let any more air in to compensate for the ccv vent (to intake) being blocked off.

F$%k it, I just removed mine and put it back to standard... Can't be dealing with no lose of boost lol - however small it may be. Car was running fine without the mod anyway and as they say - if it aint broke don't fix it.

well mine deffo aint lost any boost....and its a minimal amount of air the air intake side is losing anyway...any more air the turbo needed to reach the required boost would be drawn from the air filter side anyways..

Also lost no boost or power. And nice to know no oily air is going through my intercooler system.

Its all good over here too B) Sure you don't have a leak somewhere?

Had mine on three years now and no loss of power (can't measure boost pressure). OP must have disturbed something else.

yep, mine is all good as well, zero loss of boost and probably covered 12k miles with it on now.

checked for leaks and found nothing so no idea why it didnt like it but just my opinon tryed it didnt work so only wasted a few £ doing it but it was worth a go just not for me

anyone else got any thoughts? emoticon-0108-speechless.gif

when i put it on i used all the parts listed in the how 2 a 22mm end cap to plug the hole and a rad pipe venting under the car i spent 2 hours doing it to make sure it was right and that there was no leaks and the end cap was a tight fit and as i said i tested it with an open mind over 2 days and the boost was down and i could feel that in the way that it preformed :'( i understand the theroy and i have done similar mods to my other cars but on my fabia it just didnt like it ? nothing else was changed either or touched and it is now back to normal thats why i only did this mod once my boost gauge was fitted so i could see any changes maybe its the map i have on it aswell who knows

has your car been mapped to be running 26psi? and leaks would make no difference wotsoever....you could take the pipe off the ccv opening and take the 22mm blanking cap out as well...non would effect the boost...

Probably the weirdest thing I have ever read on the elephant hose mod. For starters the crankcase gases are not drawn into the inlet, as a diesel doesn't have inlet vacuum. The gases are forced out of the rocker cover via a one way blow off valve in the rocker cover. The gases are purely blow by gas, consisting of oil vapor and minimal combustion gases (mostly NOX)

The only thing I can come up with, is the elephant hose was either blocked or kinked. This would effectively seal the lower crankcase, and result in back pressure. The first thing that would happen, is the dipstick would be ejected from it's seating.

It doesn't appear that you have a PD160 air intake from your signature description. if you do the you should be getting enough air through the filter to compensate for the minute amount from the engine.

I have had the catch can fitted on mine for a a little while now but I also removed the EGR at the same time so I can't comment on any loss of power, as I have not experienced any. If anything mine seems to breath a whole load better.

Check again ;)

A catch can is indeed ideal but they are quite a bit of hassle to get sorted.

and imo unneccessary...

i am fine, and as said before your car shouldnt be running 26 psi on a remap, if it actually is there could be trouble ahead

yes its remaped

there was no kinks in pipe and no blockages it was a new pipe i had just bought and i could see the steam/gasses coming out of the end
