Thin Paint?

Update:-

Had a polite email from Peter@Robert Eardley's to say they have provisionally booked it in for a front bumper repaint!

Just hoping it's done well and no tell tale marks left!

Also going to ask them to see if they can remove the 'Rust like spots' that are still present on various bits of the car!

Fingers crossed !

A bit of my paint flaked off the fron fog light surround when I was washing it once. I have yet to take it to the stealers to get sorted though. There are a few other places on the car where the paint is thin such as just above the rear number plate and I have a little crack where some rust :o is coming through on the rear hatch inside. Need to get the touch up out methinks.

I brought this thread up a long while ago about our Elegance '55 plate . Only had it a week when score like mark appeard on bonnet, mentioned it to Skoda dealer who said its the water based paint they use now.We now have many chips etc all over the front and few on top proberly where flies have hit it. Its crap paint and worse i have ever had.

I had the rust on the rear hatch where it had cracked and started rust coming through . After a failed repair by skoda they agreed to replace the rear hatch .

Had the motor for approx 2 months and allready got the beginings of a 'pepper pot' front end?

Made a concerted effort not to drive to close to vehicles in front (it being a new motor and that) but always manage to pick up another cluster of stone chip marks!

The paintwork just doesnt appear to be as hard wearing as a metallic version.

Anyone else suffering from similar symptoms?

Any ideas how it can be combatted? Tried a few layers of wax etc which does help to a certain degree but wondering if there is any effective transparent

sheeting one could stick onto the most exposed parts other than using one of those car bra's?

I know this is going to sound a bit harsh, but most stone chip damage is caused by driving too close to the vehicle in front.

Oh Harsh you are 'Silkysteve' ! lol

To be fair most of the driving I do is on the motorway and obviously at speed any stones flying in the air<even at distance> are going to have a greater impact on vehicle.

The Touran I had previous definitley withstood the tirade of motorway debris better than the Octy has and as such I felt the need to vent!

There is however no excuse for paint to flake off as it has and therefore validate the need to send it back for a repaint.

phew.. feel better for that emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

I agree that the nearer you get the worse the potential stone chipping. The state of the roads hasn't helped with the harsh winter breaking up the surface.

After saying all of that, I do keep a reasonable distance, and haven't changed my driving style and this car appears to be fairing worse than others that I have had in the past.

VAG seem to be reducing the impact strength of their paint due to misguided attempts at reducing emissions of their paint and it's application process. Certainly a number of complaints have been levelled at the current MK6 Golf by journalists and owners alike. Bonnet chipping being the main problem.

Appears we are not alone! emoticon-0124-worried.gif

Thanks to the tree huggers trying to save the planet modern paint is getting worse, My 350 zed was terrible as was the Abarth so I guess Skoda are the same although so far the new Scout seems fine.

The Zed has now got ventureshield on the front bumper after 2 resprays, the second after a pheasant hit it at around 80 & amazingly the vetureshield fitted after the first respray held all the Fibreglass bits together such that I could get the bumper rebuilt, I think you need a lottery win to buy a new Nismo front end.

Likewise the Abarth has the full front wrapped + cills etc. It was chipping badly so had a front end tidy up before being wrapped. We tend to drive both cars hard & Im sorry to admit I lean on oiks who wont pull over yet the Ventureshield protects from all but the worst hits.

If your having the bumper sprayed & the rest is good its a good time to consider wrapping it

having my car Ventureshielded (if there is such a word) next week, getting the front end done and a complete bonet wrap and also getting the boot done so the dog wont scratch the paint getting in and out. I am getting mine done by a company called covertech based in the midlands. Its apparently going to take them about 5-8 hours to do. Only thing i need to do before them is to get the three chips i already have repaired. Only had the car a month so will be so glad once its got the extra protection on the front, especially ready for the winter months.

Update:-

Car going back to Robert Eardleys in Stoke for warranty paint work to be carried out tomorrow!

They have organised a courtesy car so thats a good startemoticon-0148-yes.gif

forgot to update this, Had ventureshield applied to my car last week, have had a full front application including all of the lights and had a full bonet covering. Its pointless me taking any pictures as you cant see the stuff! I also had the rear boot lip covered with ventureshield at the same time. Highly reccomend covertech in birmingham who carried out the work, very professional and the level of workmanship is second to none. They will be posting pictures of the car on their website in the near future too so should anyone want to see the work, they can do.

After the re-paint has been done I'm seriously contemplating doing the same.

Was it an expensive affair?

Did you have to detail the front end first or is it something they do?

Cheers

It all depends really on either how long you intend to tkeep the car or the type of journies you make. I have a horrible commmute to work where i am forced to pass huge lorries who always like spitting stones at me, i cant avoid them so decided to have the stuff put on. I paid over £500 for the whole bonet and the whole front kit but you can get it done for cheaper if you want the standard half bonet. I wanted everything treated so took the plunge. Happy i have done it now though and i know its a really good job as i havent received one compliment about it (which is brilliant as people cant see it!). I wanted to use ventureshield because of the guarantee it came with but i guess there would be cheaper alternatives out there- only thing is i know someone who had his silver audi a3 done with a cheaper kit and it went yellow - nasty!

Car back!emoticon-0144-nod.gif

Look's good so far but not had time to check it in detail!

Got the usual powder coated interior<wash off> and it did take 2.5 days <for front bumper>but they have given it a wax all over!

Robert Eardley staff were helpful and had a 59 plate fabia as a courtesy car.

Paintwork still needs the full 'Iron Cut' treatment so all those little naughty fillings<now sealed in> can be exterminated once and for all!

Respray paint seems to be a lot less susceptible to chips than the OEM paint jobs on a fair few cars I've seen.

I agree it's mainly down to tree huggers, who don't seem to realise while you can save 1g of CO2 and solvents per car, having said car resprayed or rusting away much earlier costs far more

Durability is a good thing, but it's rare these days. Partly down to cost and partly down to the fact you can't use durable paints and materials because they are a bit nasty.

My Octavia VRS CR DSG hatch should eventually arrive during week 46. I have received a quote for Ventureshield from Bodyguard in Northampton (excellent website), following reading many threads concerning problems with water based paint used on current cars.

£399.00 for front bumper / headlamps / door mirrors

£150.00 for full bonnet wrap.

I realise that this film will protect from damage from stonechips etc, but I am still not sure which was to go. I would have to take car there + loss of time etc. Haven`t yet found a suitable fitting agent in Essex, who come recommended. This would have an influence on my final decision.

How long have manufacturers being using water based paint? My Seat Leon tdi was built in November 2006 and has done 45,000 mls. It has some stone chips, but nothing that cant be sorted out by a smart repair.

I am also considering the Autoglym LIfeshine package at £199 from Skoda, to give a bit more protection. I know that the general concensus is to use a detailer, but my supplying dealer is in the same road as Autoglym, so have had good training I have checked).

I will need to to something, as the Automotive Manufacturers are not coming clean regarding water based paint protection and leave the customer to find out the shortfalls and pick up the tab, for green initiatives.

Would be interested to hear your thoughts and suggestions,

Whatever you do make sure it's Pdi'd properly<or not at all and do it yourself> and check paintwork closley for any of the 'iron particle' contamination that has reared its head on several new motors of late. <mine included>.Reason I say this is because if its 'Life shine' protection is administered without proper de-contamination then all your doing is sealing in the horrid nasties!

Had to use a product called 'Iron Cut' which did the job but took a while to treat the whole car.

Good luck!

Ventureshield is well worth it, get the fitter to go to the showroom and have it done before it even hits the road.

I must agree that Ventureshield seems to be very good, but feel that it would be a mistake to have it applied in dealer's as you REALLY need to have the car cleaned of these iron filings and other debris before applying ANYTHING to the car.

The ventureshield installers thoroughly cleaned my car before applying the film and it is impressive, Its fully cured now ( takes about a month) so i could attack it with a pressure washer now if i wanted to but the dirt just wipes off the front, its truley fabulous stuff and i would strongly recomend. 399+150 sounds fair but you should do some bargaining in the price as they do have margins. Ask for a discount if you go for the full bonet wrap.

Had it put on 2 cars, great product

Unfortunately the one by Bodyguard was a poor application, they have a good reputaion so I think I may just have been unlucky. I keep meaning to go back but its a hell of a treck
