New Style Curtain Airbags

Featured Replies

That will be why in the none uk brochure it says head airbags

Maybe they don't have curtains abroad?

Preferring venetian, roman or vertical blinds.

Euro NCAP update!

Looks like vRSCarl and the Venetian blinds comment above were about right!

This from Euro NCAP today:

The latest version of the Skoda Octavia that was tested by Euro NCAP, MY2004, was not equipped with a so called curtain airbag.

However, when looking at the Skoda website, it mentions that the newest model is equipped with a curtain airbag. Typically, this airbag will deploy from the whole roofline to be able to deploy in time.

It is not correct that the curtain airbag will deploy only from the A-pillar.

From this and other comments on the site, and from speaking to SUK's technical department, it seems that, on the FL cars, the charge comes from the A Pillar and the 'curtain' airbag drops down from the headlining protecting both front and rear passengers.

BTW, picked up the car yesterday, and having driven my Golf GTI into the dealership (PX), I was blown away by the refinement and build quality of the Octavia. Just shows the importance of back to back testing. Very pleased with the spec too - it's difficult to know exactly how it's going to turn out until you actually see it!

Silver, Estate, DSG, Columbus, Xenons, Rear Park, Auto-Dimming Mirror / Auto Lights, vRS Leather, Spare Wheel. The black and silver exterior (stayed with black roof rails) matches the interior perfectly with the black seats and silver trim.

Sounds a nice car. Nice spec too.

Thanks! Pics to follow over the weekend.

thats a good find.

I attach a link to the Skoda rescue guides for all their models - if you look at the Octavia, the gas generators appear to be in the roof lining above the back hatch, and the curtain air bags extend the length of the car.

Interesting as these pictures may be they are irelevant to this thread as they do not show the FL octavia. My understanding from previous threads on this subject is that the curtain airbags on the FL octy deploy from the roofline , the gas bottle/system being stored in the A pillar, the system has been tested and works perfectly well with both the front and rear deployment.

They are relevant as the supposition was made that the SRS badges indicated the location of the gas charges.

Pre FL had SRS on A & B pillar.

FL only has A pillar.

Ergo - SRS badges have no bearing on gas charges.

I'd be inclined to make the supplying dealer show you the workings behind the trim before accepting it. Surely the trim can be removed and replaced easily enough?

The drawings for the LPG Octavias on pages 14 & 15 refer to the 2009 facelift. The photos match but the line drawing isn't changed. Cheers, Les.

I think the new airbag system is called "head airbags" and is deployed along the top of the headlining with the gas stored in the A pillar.

If you have it you will see an airbag symbol on the A pillar.

Probably just a usual UK brochure thing, we call them curtain airbags, Just like it says a TFSI engine when they have a TSI.
