VRS Boost question

Featured Replies

ok guys now i finally have the rs on the road and gave it a good 500 mile run over the weekend, how fast does the std car build up boost as mine seems a little slow (compared to my tdi) building it up in say 3rd gear from overrun at 2k to wot it prob takes 2 seconds to build it to 10psi where the tdi just shoots it round to 1.5 bar instantly..

also when i dod the cambelt i found some alloy swarf in oil sat in the link pipe from the pancake pipe to the intercooler which is a bit worrying but the turbo makes no unusual sounds and uses no oil so i am kinda suspecting it may be from a previous turbo maybe? as i have seen lots of tdi turbo's that have been broken and they sound noisey usually..

i should do some vagcom logs against requested boost and actual but my laptop is not working too well now

Yeah they do take a bit longer to spool up than the TDI's, thats why the torque on a TDI comes in at 1900 revs and then dies while on the VRS the peak torque is about 3000ish revs and stays quite high all the way up to 6000+ revs, if you look at the graphs of boost delivery they are similar to the torque graphs.

Not sure about the alloy swarf in the intercooler pipe, I cleaned the oil out of mine a couple of years ago and it was dark and gunky but no metal bits in it :S Would recommend taking your intercooler off and flushing it out first with carb cleaner then with water, dry it thoroughly and refit. If any bits of crap have got lodged in the intercooler it may be blocking the air flow.

I don't have a gauge in my vRS but going on the sound I would say at around 2k rpm it takes less than a second to spool up, maybe half a second.
