Extra fuel tank?

Featured Replies

Hey

I read a post a while ago on here about a switch that opens up an extra fuel tank or something along those lines. Apperently there is a switch somewhere that opens it up and means for less frequent filling up.

Was this a wind up or am I just being stupid in not being able to find the switch?

Cheers

Its not a switch as such - located just inside the fuel cap, small button thing that when pushed in releases air from the overfill tank.

You can get an extra 5 -10 litres in if this is pushed as filling up :)

and not a good idea to top-out in the warmer weather as the tank stretches and contracts more and can cause diesel to come out the overfill drain at the top. :)

should make a hissing sound when you press it. I use the fuel nozzle to press it.

I'd only do it before setting off on a long journey, if you just drive home and the car sits in the sun, things may expand etc - although I think it's more a problem with petrol than diesel. I believe the process of doing this is referred to as "venting".

Interesting, I never knew about this. Might give this a try when I drive down to Cornwall this August!

If you want you can remove this button to give you more fuel in your tank. I can't remember what it is called.

As mentioned if you fully fill it you should do it before a long journey and it's advisable not to do it on a petrol car.

If you want an extra tank, you could carry a jerry can of diesel in the boot :dull:

I always 'vent' coz I just hate waiting in queues to fill up. I fill up every 2 to 3 weeks now.

I've not long been using this technique but having made a lot of

trips to and from Bristol lately I must say it's a very handy feature.

I recently drove from Romford to Bristol and back which was approx a 300 mile

round trip circa 80mph.

After brimming the tank I set off. Upon arrival in Bristol it was still showing a full tank :o

The needle had only dropped to 3 quarters of a tank when I returned home.

I wouldn't bother unless I was immediately going on a long run though.
