Italian Tune-Up

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

This is probably a silly newbie question, so please bear with me..!

I know if you don't do much non-urban driving (i.e. motorways & A-roads), it's a good idea to give your car an "Italian tune-up" every-so-often by giving it a rev to 3,000rpm or so, so the exhaust gases heat up and flush the rubbish out of the exhaust system and keep everything happy.

So my question is, how long should it be held at 3,000rpm for? 10s? 1 min? More? I guess the answer is to use the mirrors to check that there isn't a black plume coming from the rear of the vehicle anymore, but it's probably best that I keep my eyes on what's in front of me (the local 60mph limits are a little windy, and there's often people walking along the edge - generally, just the wrong side of a bend).

Obviously, only do this when it's safe to do so, on a warm engine, and let it cool down before turning off afterwards. ;):)

Thanks :)

Just take the car for a quick hammering, take it to more than 3k if you want, and do it more than once. Lots of hard acceleration, and you'll be sorted.

Get it up on the motorway one evening and give it a spanking

HTH

Why not just take it out for a bit of a spanking? Worked on my Golf TDI especially when I had the sticky-vanes problem.

......every-so-often by giving it a rev to 3,000rpm or so

I'd struggle not to rev over 3,000 rpm :giggle:

give it a good spank up to the red line every week or so....variable vane turbos need it ;)

I like to wait until theres some idiot hanging off my rear bumper, then give them a nice new coat of black for their paintwork :) Two birds one stone

I concur with the above, get it spanked and give the vanes a workout, check your oil levels first though if you are usually like miss daisy.

I love doing that! as already said give it a good thrashing and take it to the red line once in a while

Thanks for the input, guys. :)

I've normally avoided the motorways, because they're a bit out of the way for me on my daily commute (it'd turn a 40-minute commute into a 70-minute one, as the roads to/from are a bit jam-prone, going "the wrong way" until you get on the motorway, and low limits anyway). Due to the hours I work at the moment, I tend to want to get back home as quick as possible..! ;) (that's why I've mostly given it a run around the B-roads here, as there's a 4-mile loop near my house) Obviously if I'm going along the motorway anyway ... :)

Although I've managed to resist such a temptation, it can be quite tempting, especially the way some people drive around here - I find it rather frustrating when driving through a 30mph limit at 30mph with someone like that following me, only me to accelerate normally once it's changed into a 40mph and they turn into a little dot in the rear-view mirror, only to re-appear on my bumper a few minutes later ... just seems a bit daft (kind of an expectation to either always tailgate or not to). I suppose if you're being evil, given the current weather, they've probably got the A/C on, so it's hoovering air from the front of the car ...

Would you mind expanding on the "Miss Daisy" bit? Never really seen/heard it before ...

Ah ... not one I'd heard before! I guess that's kinda me - most of my driving is through 30mph or 40mph limits, so I'm typically driving at one of those speeds, or stuck in traffic..!

Not sure why oil levels is relevant to driving style though? Is it likely that mostly lower-rev driving will make it consume more oil? I know low oil level is bad for the turbo as it won't be lubricated? I try to check all the fluids regularly, so they're all OK. :)
