Smoking!

Featured Replies

Noticed that Mrs Stig's Ferbi is starting to smoke a fair bit while excelerating??? The engine is a 1.9tdi and has had its second service recently.

Hope its nothing serious, or is it normal?? Comments, advice appriciated as usual.....

Check the air filter. It's not a service item until 40k apparently, but they should be changed every 10k IMO.

If it's black, get a new one in.

They do smoke a bit when accelerating hard.

They do smoke a bit when accelerating hard.

I would expect some smoke from a diesel, not this much..

Richie, it shouldn't really smoke in normal driving or under acceleration unless you are hitting high revs with foot right down, then it may smoke briefly and very slightly. You may also get a puff of smoke after being in traffic for some time if you then accelerate hard. The PD engines are not really noted for smoking to any extent though. Mine doesn't emit any smoke at anytime that I've ever seen, even when Mrs Estate man has been driving and I have been following. If smoking is happening, and it wasn't smoking before the service then make sure the oil level is not overfull. Check that the airbox airflow sensor is connected properly as sometime these get left off or even knocked off during service. If you haven't treated the vehicle to a good dose of fuel injector cleaner of late...then do it! Injectors get dirty even if driven at speed over time and the engine will smoke much more easily. Failing that...get your dealer to check the EGR valve as sometimes they stick and don't recycle the exhaust gases properly, causing the engine to emit smoke when powering through the gears. Does your wife drive it hard or does she just potter around in it in the town?
