Help with Columbus

Featured Replies

I've searched but can't find the answer to this: how do I ensure that whenever I start the car, the Columbus unit starts with a map display and the radio is muted until I choose to listen to it? After starting the car, I switch to the map and turn down the radio but next time I start the car, it's back on the radio display with the volume back up. I think sometimes it behaves itself and other times it doesn't.

Thanks in advance!

I think that when you start the car the Columbus defaults back to music mode and all you have to do is press the "navigate" button and it commences from where it left off. It takes a few moments to start up as you probably know, so allow a moment before you move off.

Thanks for the quick reply - much appreciated.

I was hoping to find a way for (i) the radio to stay muted on start-up and (ii) the map to appear automatically on start-up (after the usual delay) without button-pressing. To clarify, I am asking about normal daily use of the Columbus without a destination programmed in.

Does anybody know?

According to the manual, there is a setting in Tone/Volume/Switch-On Volume that you can change.

Can't check this myself as my Superb is still in the dealers.

Thanks for that. Will have a further play with the unit tonight. Hope you get yours back soon.

Right, thought I'd cracked it but I haven't.

Tried Tone/Volume/Switch-On Volume but the +/- slider scale wouldn't go low enough i.e. there was still radio sound at the bottom of scale.

So then I just turned the volume knob anticlockwise until it muted (with the crossed speaker icon displayed), left the map on and turned off the ignition. Got out of the car, locked it, unlocked it after a minute, got back in again, started it up and - yippee - the radio stayed muted and the map display came straight back up again. Which is what I want.

But... I've just tried it now after leaving the car for an hour and it started with the 'welcome aboard' screen, then up came the radio sound with the radio screen displayed. Which is a pain when I don't always want the radio and I just want the map to come on without button-pressing.

I can't believe there isn't a mute button, or a way of preventing it defaulting to radio every time I start the car...

Do your Columbi behave likewise?

Why not select 'media' and I think you'll find it defaults to the media input when powered up. I usually use this function as it connects my phone (HTC HD2) media and hands free calls via the auxiliary input.

I then select map without a route being selected if I want to check GPS tracking or map location.

Good Luck!

I think I've got the same problem. Sometimes I'd like the map on without the radio or the SD card playing. How can I do that? :S

Thanks - good suggestion. Have tried activating AUX with nothing connected to it and will see what happens tomorrow. Hopefully that will reliably mute the sound.

It would be good to have the map as the default screen option, but nobody has suggested that it could be. Never mind, the map's just one button-press away.

Have asked the dealer too and will report if I learn anything new.

You cant go to map by default from a full power down, since the Navigation software is last to load and it takes a while to do it. If you press map or nav as soon as you turn it on from the "skoda navigation" screen, all you'll get is a "Please wait" message that sits there for a few minutes. The system defaults to audio as its the smallest, fastest module to load and gives instant entertainment.

Thanks mannyo. I understand.

Personally I'd be happy with the welcome screen while the map gets written rather than receiving an unsolicited blast of adverts, but Skoda knows best! The AUX suggestion worked to mute the sound but is a bit of a bodge really, not least as you can still hear some hissing and background interference. Not a big deal and I'll live with it.

Thanks all for your suggestions.
