Clutch fly wheel at 24,000 miles?

Featured Replies

I have a 1.6 cr new in December, i have done 24,000 miles and its used as a taxi. I only drive the car and i am very easy on most things like brakes and clutch. The car has started making a knocking noise only when you push the clutch in half way (biting point'ish but loud) and when the clutch is pushed in all the way there is a quiet rattle noise. When in neutral its fine.

Before getting this car in December i had the 1.9TDI and had to change the clutch fly wheel at 45,000 miles and to be honest it didn't sound that bad then. I was told that it is caused by driving in too higher gear ( lazy going around corners in 3rd, the engine pulled fine but caused this problem). When i got the 1.6 cr i soon realised that you could not do that as the pull around corners at low revs was not possible so my driving style changed to what i guess it should be. I thought that the clutch fly wheel would not be a problem but....

Is the fault i'm talking about the fly wheel or something else?

Thanks Kyle

At the dealers tomorrow so will ask the question, how long is a reasonable lenghth of time for the cluch fly wheel to last? Obviously in my opinion it should last..... forever!

Normally at least 120.000 miles (according to statistics I once saw in my newspaper).

Sounds like a DMF ( Dual Mass Flywheel) problem . Dealer should fix it on warranty at this mileage.

Be nice to know if it is fixed under warranty, as some manufacturers (Honda for one) are quite often saying a failed DMF is due to wear and tear (even on cars with low mileage) and therefore not covered by the warranty!

Do Skoda take photos of the DMF and send them off to HQ before deciding if it is covered by the warranty or not?

While your there ask them if they do a solid replacement system for the 1.6, they do for the 1.9

The dual mass flywheel failed at 55K on my Octavia, the indications of a failure being the sense of vibration through the clutch pedal as you accelerated through the gears after turning a corner. Once the vibration started, the failure occured within probably 50 miles and 3 days local driving.

Kyles mentioned of being lazy about changing gear when going round corners is interesting. It sounds like the car is capable of taking the low speed strain but the flywheel isnt! I drive in a simlar way sometmes and maybe it does contribute?

Incidentally one of my Uncles has a VW Bora witha 2.0 TDi and his DMF failed at 27K and was replaced under warranty. Mine wasnt.

Just returned from the dealers after they have tested/inspected the noise.

I have been told that it is the start of the DMF making a noise but isn't bad enough for it to be replaced under warranty.... YET. I have been told when it gets noisier it can be replaced under warranty as long as its under 60,000. I also enquired about a conversion to solid mass flywheel, they can convert to Solid mass under warranty (at the moment but this could be withdrawn as an option at any time by Skoda) but i would need to pay for the new clutch (as its a different clutch).

So i guess i need it to get worse sooner rather than later although i'm fine with the milage it would be my luck by the time it needs doing they would not convert to SMF.

I wonder what the time limit is on this ? My warranty expires Nov but the car's only done 24k. If it fails at say 40k in a years time does it mean I'll have to pay for a new replacement ? Surely there is an expected life of a DMF.

Do you mind me asking what dealer you are using?

Derek Slack's in Middlesbrough

There is a sticky DMF thread at the top of the general maintenance section which should answer some of your questions.

A few boy racer starts from the lights should soon wear it out
