vrs whistling turbo

Featured Replies

hi guys, sorry if this is a duplicate post, but been having a look and couldn't find one.

I found a small oil leak under the car coming from the offside corner of the sump guard, found a post which mentioned this was quite a common problem with the vRS and had somthing to do with the pipes on the turbo, and wasn't a big issue unless there was a lot of oil. Since then I noticed (heard) when driving with the window open that the whistle from the turbo is louder and when the boost kicks in under acceleration there is kind of a growing noise, I guess is the best way to describ it. No noticable change in performance and no errors showing on the dash or anything. Is this also due to the sprung clips holding the pipes to the turbo been a bit loose?? Local Skoda in Leeds\Bradford want £70 just to lift the bonnet and have a look.

Any advise on possible cause and cure, or info on a local Independant Skoda, VW Seat garage would be appriciated.

cheers guys

the 'growl' sound you mention sounds similar to mine! tbh never thought much of it! best keep an eye out for replies , its only 'now n then' i here it tho emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Yes there have been a few posts about this noise in the past, it is not unusual to find a small amount of oil under the front offside of the car as that is where the intercooloer sits, you can see it if you peer into the grill by the fog light, it looks like a small radiator, which in effect it is.

Does the whistling noise you've heard seem louder when you drive past a buliding/wall etc? Is it like a "hollow" low pitched whistle which comes in and disappears around the 1500-2000 rpm mark? The growing noise you describe, is it like the sound of loudly rushing air which only occurs when you have your foot buried in the carpet, accelerating through about 2500 rpm which then gets quieter as the revs increase? If so then these noises are quite normal, my vRS I used to have made these noises and gave no problems at all. The first noise is just the turbo speeding up and the second is the noise of the turbo providing full boost pressure as you accelerate through maximum torque of the engine. Have fun in your car and give it some lead right foot occasionally, it will thank you for it.

Ian.

i've got this same growl noise, its ontop of the normal, wistle(spool) and woosh(go go) its happens wether your driving normally or under full acceleration, but is louder under full load. With the windows down, it sounds like its coming from the off side. I've just put it down to a leaky boost pipe blowing past some oil residue, or a slightly glogged intercooler? As if it was turbo related i would expect loss of power, or a whine not a growl!

Matt

Growl will be induction roar.

Now the blueflame has settled in, I often notice a deeper growly tone as I give it the beans. B)

The K&N filter provides a nice amount of induction roar too but both are almost un-noticeable

when driving gently around town.

The turbo noise also seems more pronounced since the addition of the blueflame.

(especially in tunnels where it sounds like a missile :D )

I love all the funny noises my car makes, even the squelch when the fuel pump primes

Cheer guys for the responses,

In answer to your question Countyboy, yes it does sound louder driving past building etc, this is when I noticed it with the window down too. As I said no loss in preformance but wanted to make sure it was just a "design feature" as they are called now, and my turbo wasn't going explode whilst driving down the motorway!

scottk18: I'm in Pudsey so not far at all from Ikea, got a mate who runs a Jaguar garage who's going to have a quick look, if he's not sure I'll take it up to your mates place next week. cheers, much appriciated.

cool , it will be fine, mine is quite loud too

lol - I remember speaking to about that the first meet we had at lakeside, I was a little worried! :D

Hi Guys,

Well the cars in the garage tomorrow for replacement pipes on the turbo and intercooler, they've apparently superceded the part numbers for the pipes so the clips no longer fail and cuase the whistling and growling noises. Not cheap but least it'll be sorted, plus no more oil drops on the drive!

Turned out I only needed two of the pipes so came to £104, plus an hours labour to fit ended up much cheaper than I thought. Trouble is now, after he had a good look round I need the two front suspension bushes changing, about £8 a piece then the labour to changes, after that it's the timing belt!!
