Car Tax on the Web

Featured Replies

My wife's just renewed the car tax on her Fabia. We were amazed to find that it can now be done via a DVLA web site. The system seems very efficient. You no longer have to stand in those dreadful Post Office queues so that you can be told 'We don't do car tax here, dear'! or be interrogated on the validity of your insurance etc.

Hey, that sounds great! The worst thing (even worse than parting with the cash) is having to get all the bits and pieces together, then find a post office thats actually open. Then try and park outside without getting a ticket on your car. Then queing for ages....then.....

I'm glad they are dragging themselves into the 21st century! Almost looking forward to my car tax running out now :P

What sort of information do you have to give them online, like the vehicle reg document etc, do you just put in the numbers of the docs?

Cheers

Ross

With the renewal the DVLA give you a reference number which you type in. Their data base checks your insurance and MOT (if applicable) and you pay with a debit card (Switch etc.)

The web site is at www.dvla.gov.uk/vehiclelicence

Yup, did it yesterday for my wife's car - really impressed that I don't have to make that annoying trip to the P.O.

My car and bike tax are both due at the end of the month , and I was pleasantly surprised to see the "pay online" leaflet.

DVLA have changed something for the better for once.

Just checked the site they sent you another disc within 4 working days - thats excellent!!! Get pulled over 2days after expire date and explain to mr policeman that i just bought it off the website.

I thought they just update it electronically haha. The idea is great as mine is due for renewal on 31/12. Going to do that during that time.

But isnt the whole point of going down to P.O. to be adventurous and be frustrated with the OAPs queuing up and ppl buying 1 stamps for their S.A.E. and buy the most expensive 4inch diameter disc on this earth

Definitely a BIG timesaver for me :D

Online tax has just started over here. Dead handy.

in N.Ireland we have only recently had the luxuary of taxing at the post office. For years you had to visit one of a handful of DVLNI offices and queue for anything upto 4 hours to tax your car.

Yeah what happens if you don't get the tax disk in time? Isn't there a fine for not having a tax disk displayed?

mmmm. it will be electronically reconised you have a tax so that woudlnt be a problem and i assume there would be some sort of recipt for the transaction you can print out.. and carry around with you??

Yes, you can print out a receipt but if you haven't received the disk after 5 working days you have to phone the DVLA on a premium rate 0870 number which rather defeats the object of the exercise. Will let everyone know how long it takes to receive the disk.

yes but its still against the law not to have a valid tax disk on display,

This is true...however, you do get the renewal through 2 weeks before it is due, which should be allow ample time to have it delivered. If they do get it wrong and the disc isn't delivered in time, it would take a proper jobsworth police officer to actually do anything about it if you had the receipt and a polite apology for the situation.

If they did decide to slap a fine, etc. on you, then you can appeal it, and I suspect once the DVLA have been proven to be imcompetent, you would be in the clear.

Admittedly it's a lot of hassle. But if they can send out

 Tax Disc arrived this morning - took 4 days. Excellent service considering Christmas post. The DVLA have certainly got this one right.

Not the case for the DVLNI, what a balls up they made when we informed them that we had sold the wife's fiesta on. Got a letter about 4 months later, thanking us for informing them we had taken a completely different car off the road, followed by a tax renewal form for the fiesta!

Great, I thought.... or maybe not...

I can't use it as my MOT (back in June) does not have the barcode number that you need to use online.. DRAT.

Looks like Sandra has to brave the post office again :D

Used it last night for Mrs C's Astra. Had a bit of confusion, because we forgot that we'd had a new ownership document, but once we'd found that it was easy.

Just had a look on the DVNI web page. You can renew on the phone, but only if you are insured with Allianz NI or Church and General insurance :(.

  • 2 months later...

Just tried to renew my elder son's car tax on line. On the way to DVLAs website I found this article about teething problems and, when I reached the right part of DVLA's site, I was greeted by this. :(

My younger son is trying to find a job as an LGV driver and has been accessing the Jobcentre's website from home last Friday and this morning. It's far easier to use than visiting a Jobcentre and using their electronic kit - but only if it works. It didn't on either day. What price high-priced technology which replaces people behind desks..? :(

I did mine the week before last on the Thursday afternoon. Disc arrived the following Monday

Splendid idea IMHO, saved visiting the Post Office and having to come into contact with the poor and the coffin dodgers in their cardies who smell of wee (no offence Den ;) ).

The butler was most grateful :D
