Throttle Body Clean - How often

Featured Replies

How often should you clean the throttle body? I cleaned mine out approximately 6 months ago and it was lovely and smooth afterwards. Now its starting to feel a bit jerky again as it did before hand. Is 6 monthly about right??

Depends how many miles you do really.

I cleaned mine out over a year ago at around 100k and it had never been cleaned before (it was filthy) I've not cleaned it out since and 30k later it still looks fairly clean.

30K? I have done nowhere near that. All short journeys though. I guess it might pay to get another gasket and take it off to check it.

Cleaned mine today. Another easy DIY job that just requires a screwdriver, 5mm allen key, brake/carb cleaner and some cloths.

And as chicken_eyebrow mentioned in his very helpful guide, worth replacing the gasket at the same time (£2.09p) from Skoda.

It was pretty clean on the rubber pipe side, but much dirtier on the other end and car does seem to drive a bit smoother as a result, so a worthwhile job if you've never done it and are unsure when or if it has ever been done. 15 mins tops.

ps: to get to two of the throttle body bolts (without removing pipes or connectors) i had to use the allen key long wise (so that i only had the short stem for leverage). Hence unless you have almighty fingers, you may need to use a socket wrench or similar over the end of the allen key to generate enough leverage to loosen the nut.

The only easy peasy DIY job left for me now is to replace the air filter (still can't decide whether to get a performance panel filter or standard £5 job) and the RARB (hoping for group buy to happen shortly given the interest in the group buy section for them).

Oooh there's a group buy on the RARBs?

Might have to check that one out... I was on the verge of paying DPM the full price for one
