Exhaust System Mods

Featured Replies

I'm looking to replace my exhaust system with something a bit more impressive on the end of it. (something that pokes out but not a chavvy spud-cannon exhaust!)

I was rather hoping you guys could guide me towards something that sounded nice, maybe helped the performance a little bit and looked sweet on my Furby. Oh and obviously I would like something street legal, I don't really want any bother from the police.

some of the jetex exhausts look nice, they claim increased performance without extreme chav noise but a little noise, just to make it sound a bit sportier, the fit well with the exsisting vrs trim aswell

heh, shame I'm not running a vRS. I need something to poke out under the bottom of the standard classic bumper, I don't feel like poking a hole in my bumper. :)

Is it a vRS you've got?

If it is, then a Miltek looks good, it's different to OEM as it has twin round pipes. If you want the oval look then Blueflame and Jetex do them. If you want more performance you can remove the Catalyst as it's not tested for the MOT.

Edit: it's not a vRS. You have 2 choices, you can either fit a vRS one and cut a hole in the bumper (or fit a vRS one) or try and find a company to custom build one.

Whats the legality of cherrybomb exhausts? Is it against the law to remove the backbox or have a straight through pipe?

I don't want to take the cat off or change the exhaust unless I know it wouldn't be a problem with MOT/insurance.

Why do you want a performance exhaust on an sdi?

Because it sounds like a tractor...

it will just sound like a louder tractor then imm afraid emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

I've heard that Cherry Bomb replacement boxes take away some of the high-end and replace it with some low-end rumble/purr. Heh. £30 for a cherry bomb from eBay, may as well give it a go see what its like. (well if i can get one with an E or kite mark)

Oh and just for anyone in future: there is no definitive sound limit for cars. However, police use dB meters and could test your car at 7m away (roadside), and if your car is +10dB compared to the standard, they could pull you over and give you a slap on the wrist. However, you could let them know that at 7m, it gives enough room for obstacles/surfaces to amplify the soundwaves, and dependant on your environment (wide open countryside, busy city street) you could argue that reverberation is causing the car to 'sound' loud to the meter.

As dB is a ratio to 'silence' or background noise, and my knowledge tells me +3dB is effectively twice as loud (200% of original loudness), this means +10dB is nearly 4 times louder than the standard car. If you ever get failed on your MOT, pulled over or spoken to by the police, then you can tell them that the MOT/legal requirements DO NOT state a upper dB limit, therefore making their case against you mean sweet eff all.

However, depending on how you use the sound, you could be charged with 'breaking the peace' but I'm sure noone from Briskoda drives through residential areas at 3am as fast as they can. ;)

blueflame every time..

+1

Would a blueflame system make it sound like a purring panther? Meow.

I only really notice a bit more turbo whoosh and a slightly

lower tone over the standard pipe TBH,

I'm glad because I didn't want a loud pipe.

I'm ashamed to say that for me it was purely a cosmetic thing. :D

I simply think it's the best fit in the cutout.

At times I hear my SDI whistle while accelerating, I'm sure theres a turbo hidden away under there.. I timed myself 0-60 on a ..private road ;).. and it took me just slightly over 13 seconds. I've heard from people that the car should take about 18 seconds to 60. Perhaps its because I absolutely rag it in the first 3 gears but who knows why it whistles. I can reach 30 just using 1st gear and my clutch pedal, before having to change. I dunno.. I'm probably just imagining the whistle!

lol yeh wishful thinking :D

Dont need a private road to drive at 60mph ya know! :p

I went beyond 60mph, took it up to 110mph which took me ages to get to. I was also told that 95 (or thereabouts) was the top speed of the car. I also had 1k more revs to go before the red in 5th! But I do wonder where is the whistling from? It is a turbo whistle sound, and its always the same so can't be from other cars!

ru sure its not the sucking sound of the intake..? :giggle:

Also, the dB thing,my bro had his alfa 159 decatted and some silly exhaust and it was so loud we can normally hear him coming from the other end of the street..either setting off the alarms or the exhaust, wasn't clever nor 'cool' imo.. :dull:

Did sound nice in the car but it got a bit tiredsome after a while.. esp on longer motorway trips..

imo you could just decat it and see what sound it produces, and then work from there if your really insisting on some noise.. Have you done intakes yet?

Miltek :8

Some quality issues with Blueflame i believe

Interesting... I had not heard this...

My faithful indy fitted mine and he said that it was a "very well constructed piece of kit..."

TBH as he didn't sell it to me he wouldn't have had any reason to exaggerate

What are the known quality issues Banana?

Remember a while back some members where having problems, mainly with the sport cats i believe, the internals coming apart or something, im sure a quick search would find out or someone else will confirm

i have a Miltek with celi 100 cat didn't pick it the car came with it lol, im intrigued how they installed it as i have xenon's and i believe it mucks up the auto leveling :/

But couldn't a decat possibly cause it to fail its MOT? Intakes?

And yeah I'm positive its not the air intake. I'm probably whacking a cheapish induction kit on at some point could give it some nice pulling power!

tut tut

You have a SDI!!!

induction kit wont make a difference..... your best phoning up james may and richard hammond and asking them to give you a push off a cliff for some added speed

Diesels do not have Catalytic converters they are particulate filters, a diesel is not emissions tested so has no requirement for a cat / particulate filter

they are Smoke Tested however, but will be fine

As said before...

If you want more top speed, looks and accelaration and are thinking of spending £1000 to £2000 on your car in next two years on an sdi to uprate it...

Well you may as well sell your sdi, get a £1000 loan, buy a vrs and save a lot of money and time as the vrs will have everything you need as standard.

I had the mpi before and bought items which are compatible with the vRS when the time came.. :giggle: (namely upper strut and RARB). I bought other lil things like induction kit, purely for sound and springs (both together cost ~£100?) investment I can afford to 'expend' for the time I had with the mpi
