Positioning of a Plasma Screen

Featured Replies

I am the proud new owner of a 42" plasma which will tomorrow sit in the position previously occupied by my now obsolete CRT. :):):)

SWMBO would like me to mount the new on the wall. There are two places that I could do this the most obvious of which would be above a radiator. Is this a bad idea?

I humbly await the opinions of the experts.

Yup, above the rad isnt a good idea.

You want the centre of the screen at eye level, eyes level with 1/3 from the bottom if you really must mount higher.

Obv use the right mounting kit for the size and weight of your TV, and only mount on a solid brick wall unless you fancy it on the floor. Oh, and always check for wires, pipes and chimney spaces before mounting.

As said, don't mount it above a radiator or a fireplace. Manufacturers tend to void the warranty if you do.

Thanks Guys. I'm guessing that the excess heat coupled with heat generated by the screen wouldn't do anything for the life of the product.

Off topic now I know, but can anybody reccomend a decent online retailer of quality HDMI cables to connect up to my Blueray/Sky HD box. The prices of the ones in Comet looked a little high :giggle:

Don't mount it on a wall underneath stairwell. Friend did this a few years ago. All was fine, until his 4 year old, for no discernible reason, decided to pee all over it through the bannisters.

I hear it was tuned into Big Brother at the time. Serves them right. :D

Ebay. HDMI cables is cables no matter how much you pay. The ones for my PS3, Xbox 360 and Sky HD cost the the princely sum of £1.50 each.

You could remove the radiator and fit the plasma in its place,it will have about the same heat output.lol

Interesting. There are really mixed opinions on this. I know other people that swear by the more expensive cables.

I'll give that some consideration. :)

It's a digital signal, you either get the 1, or you don't.

Unlike analogue there is a range that gives a 1 and a range that gives a zero and error correction to deal with noise.

They will make virtually no difference over any cable of a reasonable standard.

+1 on the HDMI cables. I have a £1 cable connecting my PS3 up! Think Tesco have them for around £1. 1's and 0's in and 1's and 0's out. What has quality got to do with it - its digital. Do you have a £30 USB cable connecting your printer, camera, camcorder to your PC? Thought not ;)

Thanks everyone. Even if this forum can't agree on fuel addatives, the view on HDMI cables is clear.

I have a higher quality HDMI cable which obviates the problem of signal degradation present in some cheaper cables which causes a '1' to look like an 'I'. The extra 20 quid for the shielded cable which also prevents the '1's looking like 'l' and 'i' might also be worth it.

No cable can prevent a '0' looking like a 'O' though. The materials are just too elastic to prevent that.
