Tyre Experiences Michelin Pilot Sport 3 vs Avon ZZ3's

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just a couple of quick questions, I'm in two minds on which to purchase.

Michelin's people I know say trust the brand.

But a friend of mine who runs a Rover 45 tdi sport has just put 4 Avon ZZ3 boots on and really rates them. Recently my Dads work, have arranged on his Vectra tdi Sri 4 to be fitted.

Took the car out last night round Watford/Hemel in mixed conditions, dry wasn't to bad, but on m1 junction 8 slip southbound bends after drizzle the car was all over the shop when a little bit of power was applied..

This hasn't helped make my mind up at all, so thought I'd through the question to octavia drivers.

For Ref My Octavia is Tdi VRS

He's to any help

Kind Regards

sorry i dont understand , did you mean your dads sri now has avons fitted, if so its a difficult comparison as vectras have a poor chassis and dont put the power down the best.

but a work colleague has had 2 sets of zz3s on a alfa 156 (2.4 v6) and loved them and he drives like a maniac (and he only has one arm).

i dont think you would go far wrong with either set really.

Hi,

Sorry for the lack of clarity, the question I really wanted to ask is.

Avon Zz3's or Michelin Pilot Sport 3's?

They are really in different leagues / price ranges.

The Michelins are the better tyre I would imagine.

Michelin's every time ,Avons don't come close .Thats my opion !!

Hi mate,

I've had Avon ZZ3's on my 08 Octy VRS for the last 3 months & I really like them, very smooth, quiet & grippy-they look cool too!

If they're good enough for Morgan to fit them on their Aero Supersports, they're good enough for me!

I used to run an MG ZR160 with Michelin PS3's & I wasn't happy with their wear-rate at all.

Also - Buy British,Not French!

You sure it was PS3 and not PS2 as they have only just come out a few months ago.

At the OP I had Avon ZZ3 on my 07 vRS and I went from them to Vred Sessanta and then to PS3. the PS3 are way better than the ZZ3 and even the sessantas. Dry grip is great and wet is fantastic (I'm running stage 2+ aswell).

At the end of the day the tyre is what keeps you on the road so I wouldn't compromise on them.

The treadwear rating on PS3 is 320. Vreds are 280 and the ZZ3 were similar so you will get more miles out of the PS3 than the other 2.

Guess they must have been PS2's then, it was back in 2004!

I'll not have the Avon's for long anyway, as my new toy will arrive in September with Dunlops or Conti's on it. I did try looking for Vred Ultrac Sessanta's but they're pretty hard to come by even online.

Evo did a pretty comprehensive tyre test a couple of issus back & they rated Conti Sport Contact 3's & (I think) Uniroyal Rainsport the best. The test isn't up on their website yet though.

Finally Re: the Avons, if they're OEM on a £70,000 V8 Morgan Aero with 367bhp, they can't be all bad can they........? :giggle:

Yep they would have been PS2 if not PS1

Im not saying the ZZ3 is a bad tyre. It's not but the PS3 is leagues ahead.

Evo never tested the likes of the Eagle F1, PS3, Sessanta etc though so was hardly a good test for a performance tyre.

Just because a tyre is OEM on a car doesn't mean it is the best there is

the contisport 3s in evo are special fitment for the mx5 ,so you the results are only valid for mx5s.

Hi all,

Thank you for all the comments re tyres.

I know it's going to cause a storm but as planning ahead in march to look into

a new Skoda, end of options lease coming up, think as I've managed to find Avons for £70 plus delivery to my local tyre fitting place who will kindly fit them. As a gap fill going for the Avons as SWMBO is expecting in November, money is going to be tight.

I fitted PS3s to mine a couple of weeks ago and all good so far.

The one downside with the Octavia is cabin noise and a lot depends on the tyres fitted. I would recommend reviewing tyre test sites and choosing a tyre with very low noise (as well as good adhesion etc.). Cabin noise is the one reason I will not be buying another Octavia (2.0TDI DSG L&K Estate) although I like everything else about the car and brand. Road tested a Golf 6 and, as my wife said, its so quiet - so maybe have to go to the dark side!!
