Cam cover

Featured Replies

Just about to replace my Turbo on my Fabia VRs, and have read on the Midland Turbos website that some VAG cars should have the cover replaced in the event of over speed or debris damage. Can anyone explain why and whether or not it applies to Fabias?

Cheers

Cover has a pressure sensitive valve for the PCV system. Doubt it would blow on a VRS

Is that why they say replace it, I assumed it was due to possible debris getting in the oil or something!

I don't see how turbo debris could possibly get into the rocker cover. Taking the two scenarios possible with blade failure.

1: Intake side. Debris normally gets stopped by the inter cooler. Small particles can find their way into the engine combustion chambers via the inlet manifold and valves, but this is rare.

2: Exhaust side. Debris usually get blasted into the cat. Very rarely, small bits can get past the exhaust valves and into the combustion chambers.

Usual process for turbo replacement, is thorough cleaning of inter cooler and all boost pipes, and inlet manifold. Turbo comes with new exhaust manifold anyway. Engine oil and filter change. New turbo oil feed lines. Possibly new exhaust system if damage is suspected, or excessive back pressure due to debris fouling.

I've clean boost pipes and intercooler, drained oil and changed filter. I haven't changed the oil feed pipe as I've ran lengths of wire and cleaner through it and it seems fine. Am just about to de-coke the inlet manifold. Hopefully get it all back together and running tomorrow. Anyone any idea how much a new feed pipe is? Don't want to sound like a penny pincher but I'm about broke at the minute.

I don't think the oil feed pipe would need changing. :)

I also can't see how logically, the cam cover would need replacing either :D

Just clean everything up a bit, replace what broke, and put back together again.

Thats what I wanted to hear, got someone to blame now if it goes t**s up! On a serious note, I sprayed some degreaser stuff in the feed pipe, swilled it through, then ran a length of bowden cable through it and apart from oil, nothing, no lumps etc came out so I can't see any reason to replace it!

OK, checked the price of new cam cover....£96, so it didn't get changed. Have so far done about 500 miles without a hitch. No weird ambulance siren noises, screeches or excessive black smoke so all seems good for now! :-) Just want to get the alloys refurbed, a few bits of paintwork sorted and I'll be happy with it! :-)

im replacing mine tomorrow, and i got advised my midlands turbo to replace the cam cover, wheres best to get a new oil filter from? im just excited to drive the thing as its been 4 weeks lol and now ive got a garettt :)

I guess I'm a bit late replying now, but for the filter I just went to a local VAG specialist(Protheroes in Market Harborough). DId you bother with a new cam cover???
