High Efficiency FMIC's

Featured Replies

Guys,

before I start let me just say, I’m not intestinally trying to advertise or promote anything.

As a former Ibiza Cupra Mk 3 owner I know the difficulties and the financial implications of getting hold of a decent FMIC.

I've seen you can get alot of these 'Plate and Bar' imports from china, but to be honest the thermal performance of one of these coolers offers only a slight improvement on the standard OEM intercooler.

Any way, my point is this.

I’m an engineer who works for a company that manufactures heat exchangers for the bus and coach market.

I can build an I/C to any size, and fabricate tanks to pretty much any profile, all I need is the required dimensions.

I am extremely confident that my I/C will outperform most intercoolers on the market.

So my question is this.

Would anybody be willing to replace one of there imported I/C's for one of mine? I am willing to run comparative tests on the import and mine, to prove that the temperature drop will be significantly better.

If proved successful I will be able to manufacture some more and provide them at an extremely low price. And the volunteer will drive away with a free I/C.

*Takes a deep breath*

you are advertising buddy sounds good but you need to join freedom to do such a thing

will you I/C be flow tested ?? what design will they be using bar and fin etc etc

for what its worth a standard sidemount is better than the ones off ebay but people dont wanna hear that lol

what would it be made from ?? have you done one before for a car and its worked???

join freedom and then go from there but if you can bring a cheap cooler that works well in a kit form you will sell loads but it will have to be a kit people want kits not just a cooler

Damn I'm interested but you're a lil far from me :( Got a toyo sport ebay special at the mo

Guys,

you need to check you wording as well :D :D or the mods will have your guts for garters :D

join freedom and you can sell stuff and its really cheap. I need to rejoin but still waiting for a decent job :-(

would you be able to do a replacement side mount or twin smic as I am in the process of looking for a tt/s3/cupraR twin at the moment as I believe that with both wheel arches vented and the intake area cleaned up a bit they should be able to handle a bit more power and retain the stock look (which is not possible with a shiny front mount)

what I planned to do was to use the twintercoolers with the cupra style pipe across the front to join them but route the pipe work a bit like some of the Golf fmic setups by going across to the passenger side first. The only problem with this setup is the MAP sensor on the twins is on the passenger side to suit the inlet manifold of the BAM engine, so if you can fabricate a twin set up with a map sensor on the drivers side as well that would be rather cool :D

Interesting..

Bit far for me to come unfortunately :)

Talking of heat exchanger manufacturers, I used to work for DENSO Marston in Bradford.

I'd be interested in a KIT aslong as the price was right and the results proved it was worth the expense.

Ahh Denso is one of our main customers, Ive been to the site in Telford a few time, impressive to say the least.

Very interesting. Will be watching this.

I'd be interested in one in the future if the price is right. I'm a bit skeptical of these ebay ones as there is no evidence as yet they are any better than the standard SMIC and the Forge ones whilst undeniably good are still the best part of £700. If you could offer a kit with all the pipework, and either an exchange crashbar or a cooler which didn't require cutting of the crashbar for less than £400 then I think you'd be onto a winner.

This is the forge one that you'd be competing against.

If you could knock out units like this, or (cunning thought) just a little smaller to match up with the hybrid K03/K04 turbo setups (which are are very popular across the entire VAG 1.8 20vT family ) ... complete kit for < £500 ish and still have a profit margin, you'd be onto a winner

good luck

£500 is way too much, a core can be built for much less as the op says and the pipework (as long as its not samco) can be bought for not a lot too either

I'd have to agree

Cheers Guys, im really impressed with the amount of interest, snow_muncher, that forge one is the ideal cooler to replicate becasue its twin pass and the pipe work is minimal, just a few questions though:

Do the hoses marry up with standard SMIC hoses?

Do you need to replace the whole crash bar, or can the standard one be modified?

Whats the largest core i can make without having to modify the crash bar?

Have you got any dims for that unit?

Im really determined to get this project off the ground, I just need the oppurtunity to prove it works, my knowledge of I/Cs is extreamely good, however my knowledge of the Octavia VRS pales in comparrison to some of you guys.

With the Forge one the standard crashbar has to be cut, the Forge is too thick and too high to fit behind the crashbar. Forge do include a re-inforced crash bar as part of the kit and you get a £50 refund if you send your old crashbar back to them in exchange.

TBH I think if you made one which was thin enough or not high enough to require cutting the crashbar it wouldn't cool the charge anywhere near as well as the Forge one does, the core would end up a similar sort of size to the ebay ones.

Agree with that bit, although if i was to make a core to the same size as the ebay ones, it would still out peform it.

Is it a big job to modify the crash bar?

Hopefully ! :p

Being fitted next week

Do you need to replace the whole crash bar, or can the standard one be modified?

The standard one has a section cut out

The top section that's been cut out has then been reinforced.

I'm afraid my car's at the tuners at the mo. I was hoping to go and have a look at progress later this week.

I can try to get some dimensions for you then, if that'd be helpful.

Hmmm seems a pretty big job to modify that crash bar, not something you can do outside someones house lol.

Yeah if you could get us some dims mate that would be great.

Cheers

I've got a smaller eBay special which fit's under the crash bar would it be worth copying one of them?

2 pass or single pass? have you got any dims? I can build a replica and then test it against the Ebay one, just for reference.

As Karlbar said, what about a straight swap SMIC?

Forge do an uprated SMIC, and I have all the dimensions of the standard Valeo SMIC. Is there much room for improvement there? I guess you could make it deeper, and use aluminium for the ends...

I just don't like all the messy pipework of the FMIC's. Plus they must reduce the effectiveness of the radiator and condenser. The ducting for the SMIC is so good, it would be a shame to waste it!

Also I'm not sure if the standard engine really "needs" something as massive as the Forge unit. Considering that 95% of people are running a standard K03s turbo.

This one?

That price is unreal lol

Have you got a technical drawing for it or just a sketch?

Single I think enters one side and out the other. I'll get some pictures and dimensions tomorrow if you're interested?

Im intrested in this , but i like the forge design when you got to mod the crash bar and also like the big mouth that you do on the oct bumper so it shows the I/C .

Definately mate, my email is [email protected]

Cheers

Only issue with making a better SMIC is that it would have to be considerably better than the standard SMIC which is pretty good in itself. With space constraints you would probably have to offer a twin SMIC setup for it to be that much better than the standard SMIC and then you get the issues of getting pipework to fit. I think if a company offered just the right pipework there would be more of us running the twin SMICs off the Audis and Leons as they are suited to the power levels our cars would be running on a K03S with remap and bolt on mods and are cheaper than the large single FMICs like the Forge.
