High Efficiency FMIC's

Only issue with making a better SMIC is that it would have to be considerably better than the standard SMIC which is pretty good in itself. With space constraints you would probably have to offer a twin SMIC setup for it to be that much better than the standard SMIC and then you get the issues of getting pipework to fit. I think if a company offered just the right pipework there would be more of us running the twin SMICs off the Audis and Leons as they are suited to the power levels our cars would be running on a K03S with remap and bolt on mods and are cheaper than the large single FMICs like the Forge.

So why do Forge sell theres for nearly £500? crazy....Has anyone ever bought an upgraded SMIC from Forge?

There are a couple of good SMIC's about (not counting the Forge one)

Eurojet racing have one, see here

Tyrolsport do one as well and here

and there are a couple of others that I cant remember. boost factory but not sure if they are still going?

The dimensions on the Tyrol sport one are huge in comparison to ther standard one.

What I am trying to find out is what is the best type of IC for a SMIC or twin SMIC? bar and plate, tube and fin etc? would I be better just waiting to get hold of a TT/S3/Cupra twin and modding the pipework Or possible an A4 one as I think they are a little bit bigger?

A tube and fin design is more efficient than a plate and bar set up, the extra weight and mass of material means that you will probably suffer loads with heat sink.

Also with a 'plate and bar' you lose the front face cooling, this is because the bars which makes the tube area are normally 5-10mm thick.

With a standard extruded tube, the nose (front face of the core) is 0.9mm, as the air hits the cooler you are cooling the whole tube parameter not just the sides.

Does that make sense lol?

Send me the dims for a standard SMIC and we will take it from there, i will build you an upgraded version and we can test it? Im a firm believer of talk being cheap lol.

Regards the twin set up, i cant really help you on that mate, you will know better than me whether or not it is possible. I think it will be difficult because the pipework involved will be massive.

Are you thinkin about running them in series or in parrallel?

i agree with millsey and bodge its not the size but how its made forge is well expensive for what is in essence a twin pass IC and some fancy pipes, fyi its also connects to the standard restrictive pancake pipe so ultimately it can be all bells and whistles but it still links in to a sh*tty restrictive vag part.

forget forge, there is better stuff out there for the money, i recont the eurojet uprated high flow SMIC would be just as good as karlbar posted, now if you could do one of those i would be interested millsey as have been conteplating getting one shortly as it goes rather than the same old same old forge route....Plus sod cutting my crash bar.....

maybe we could work something out?

As well as the SMIC location; there's space underneath the front crash bar.

Maybe a good comprise in location/size between SMIC hole and forge.

( does go full circle back to millsey's orginal post ! :giggle: )

(hope Rob doesn't mind me re-posting his image )

if you can make a better SMIC with proof its better then I reckon this could be the route for me also.

Standard SMIC:

are you suggesting an L-shaped double whammy smic/fmic combo snow mucher ;)

the eurojet one has been proven to work better than standard and IMO is the way ahead all things considered, im sure of this.

Sure if a forge one came up for the right price i would be tempted however, saying that a cut front crash bar does not sit well with me

Genius,

Do you reckon there is enough room to get a 110mm deep core in there or is that your lot?

Whats the pipe centers Rob?

Edited by millsey

Mine's 90mm deep and it's pretty tight.

Core size is 155mm x470mm x 90mm

I'll have a look later, see how big that gap is behind. It can't really go forward any more than it is.

Doh! Just realised you meant the SMIC. Um.. maybe if you modify the plastic snorkel thingy.

yours was a pig to fit iirc Rob wasnt it?

yours was a pig to fit iirc Rob wasnt it?

Very much so. Had to modify half of the pipework.

But that's because I'm tight and bought a Chinese copy of a proper design.

nah, we are the diy school Rob B)

did look a pain from your thread tho!

DIY is the way forward lol

Anyways, I think im on to to something now with the upgraded SMIC, someone has been kind enough to help me push this to the next level.

I will keep you updated on my progress, and post pics throughout the project (if im allowed :p )

Cheers for all your help so far

Please do post pics and progress. If you do get to the point of selling them you'll need to join Freedom for the bargain price of 12 quid a year, or become a site sponsor once they make you wealthy and popular :)

this is going to be a good thread  ,

millsey def seems to know his stuff so i think we can expect to see good things!

This is the standard ducting:

Some mad de-ranged idea like this ?

forge_smic_dwhamy.jpg

Nope, not me mallet.gif

i think you need a 4x4 snorkel to aid airflow with that new idea of yours

Lol I like your thinking, Pressure drop would be immence though unfortunately

lol dont listen to him millsey, he is taking the p*ss :giggle:

Now thats just daft.

It would be far more sensible to install a secondary air-con system to keep the fmic at optimal temp

Being sensible ...

You can greatly improve the airflow of the SMIC location by venting the plastic arch line (area shown in pic)

Just drilling lots of holes will help

What about this FMIC from Allard http://www.allardmotorcompany.com/pages/information/pdf/SKODA-OCTAVIA-1.8-TURBO.pdf Keeps piping like robs from passenger side to drivers side so no back and forth of piping from drivers side to outlet on FMIC on passengers side back underneath to the TB. Just an idea.

But of course to eliminate the crash bar problem dont make it as high.
