High Efficiency FMIC's

Featured Replies

I read the Forge piece about their SMIC and the gains were not as good for the price compared to their FMIC. But the Tyrol Sport SMIC seems to be a big improvement, they also do the twin SMIC for big power applications so it looks like if Millsey can get a good performing SMIC there will be a lot of intrest and he can then look at pushing further with a twin setup for big big power.

indeed, especially considering an uprated SMIC is A LOT easier to fit than the FMIC kits, dont get me wrong for me its always trying to find an alternative to the norm to get the best for my buck no matter how hard the challenge. The forge FMIC kits have never been ideal imo due to the bumper/fitting issues and down to their sheer cost. These uprated SMIC kits should be a lot easier to fit for a lot of people and cost a lot less for negligable (if any) decrease in performance over an FMIC.

Aside from the forge uprated SMIC which doesnt get good reviews the eurojet and especially tyrolsport ones do get good reviews and have test data to prove. It will mean there is an alternative product out there for us to use.

be nice to be able to upgrade the SMIC and in the future be able to swap sides and add another in :D

not sure another one is needed Karl.

ok, so an update.......

just a teaser really as i am now testing the SMIC, however my first impressions are the car feels more responsive, it seems to be holding boost for longer and feels more urgent and just stronger allround.

The test data is being reviewed at the moment, however an immediate drop in heat on the exhaust side and intake side have been seen, am waiting to see the data logs, Tom (millsey) and Shaun, the 2 guys who built and fitted the unit, are top guys and really know their stuff, i dont let anyone work on my car normally but me, however these guys fit units to military and commercial vehicles for a living so this is their game and they excelled themselves imo.

Thanks guys!

Any questions please ask me as millsey is away for a week or so.

Some pics.....see the larger core size, also much better and more efficient core construction

I still need to adapt the front airscope to the new SMIC and fit a new vent to my wing.....

if these are actually very high efficiency then its safe for me to say it would also be good to offer people a cheap fmic that fits well to compete with forge.

is there a chance of getting a fmic made up for a custom application?

this is an alternative to an FMIC, thats the point of an uprated SMIC, without all the work of fitting an fmic unecessarily, also you are not blocking cooling to the radiator with an smic.

ebay jobbies have way more pipework than required and will lose boost though all their pipework, Tom is making a core to replace the ebay style jobbies and can make custom fmic too.

Dont make things complicated if they dont need to be!

mine is already complicated lol i have a fmic lined up(not ebay jobbie) and if these are proven to be very good then i would preffer on of these as i know its abilitys, plus i dont think a smic would be good for my final application hence the question.

all this talk about twin smic, dont you think that means more piping and complications then?

yes i do thats why i think for 99% of applications a single uprated smic is all thats needed, adding extra pipework will justy increase lag.

Yes if you need a custom core he will do it, do you have the spec? can pass on the info for you when i speak to him next.

out of interest why wont an smic work with your setup?

i might work but i would rather just go straight to the larger core straight away that will work, there is no rush as i need to get the engine in and measure the size's needed.

i will eventually be going gt3071r so a very good cooler is a must to keep my charge temps down the pipe work is negligable imo so i wouldnt worry about that

large core doesnt always mean better cooling, can have too much of a good thing.

its about core efficiency.

this core has been designed to work as a competitor to an fmic kit not as an inferior option, the test logs we have seen from tyrolsport shows the upgraded smic is better than the fmic kit they tested against (their own).

Now i am not saying this is better than a forge fmic as its not been tested, however that is possible i guess, but the point im trying to get across is this is not a halfway product to an fmic, its a serious alternative, and again, this product will out perform any chinese diy kit due to their shortfalls.

i understand that about efficiency and after seeing WMI fitted and large fmic on decent power cars circa 300hp i havent seen any problem with nice low charge temps ~ 13 degrees C, if gunning for more power and at higher boost pressure a decent cooler is key to consitant power.

if it can at least equal a forge item and he can make a fmic that im after then i dont see the problem, i think this is getting too complicated for the simple question of can he make a FMIC to size

Luca,

Where is the MAP take-off on this one? Do you need to put a MAP adaptor in the pipework between the intercooler and throttle body?

lol, i already told you boomsley he can make a core to your size........................

I just wanted to be clear for everyone reading this post it is an alternative option to an fmic to those with any sense ;) if you still wanna be flash and let everyone see your fmic then pay more and fire away

Joking aside buddy

gt30.....nice, what kind of rpm will this kick in at as garretts can be laggy lower down?

considered the gt2860rs or the gt2871r?

Jamie the map flange is on the opposite side to oe, you can see it in the fifth pic done top right corner, no adapter required just plug your map sensor into the unit and away you go!

any ideas on price? Think I might need to start saving :p

you got me i just want to be flash and let people see it :D

didnt see the bit where he can make one if needed, coolio cheers

i have looked about a fair bit and for the time and money spent on a gt28 i could have a gt30 for a little more depending where you buy from, i like that option as it has plenty left over if you want to up the boost, seeing a few about now and the nice fugures they are making is also a good. steevie wonders is a nice example.

rpm wise 3.5k spooling and at 4k its at 2bar of boost apparently, should be fine

you never know i may change to a lower spec and power output depending if a reasonably priced setup turns up, i would be happy with ~350hp and matching torque B)

this is not my decision so i wont say, millsey needs to finalise figures etc however you i think will be pleasantly suprised.

put it this way, it will be a lot lot lot less than a forge item including their smic.

spotted this set up is for sale http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=280041 any good??

thats cool thanks for the help, as said not needed right away, i need a proper meassure up and just see what the logging brings back for these first, but its nice to know there is a plan for when its needed

lol, no worries buddy just pulling your leg!

spec sounds cool, snow muncher is going for the figures you are with his setup and a gt2860rs, these are meant to be the best mid range (as garrett term it) or big turbo (as we would) for fast spool, a couple of tuners we have spoken to assure us they can get spool at 2.5k

Will keep you posted on the results!

buy in the states dude, cheaper!
