Trip to York

Featured Replies

Due to having one of the hard drives fail in our PC i've been waiting till everything was back up and working before getting these pictures off the camera. Took them all in June when we had a long weekend up in York for our wedding anniversary. :)

Really good pictures mate. I really like the tone/colours in your pics. Good job!

I detect that the Wavey Wand has been cast over these photos Dave!

Lovely Photos. York is a great place isn't it. I drove through the centre of it on Saturday, as I was buying a printer from Clifton Moor, then picking my brother up from his house near the Uni.

Have you done anything with the pics, eg. the 3rd pics 2nd wall pic and the "Beacon? The colours don't look right, they look very vivid.

I've got to get to grips with CS5 eventually. ;)

Hi Jim... Some of the images are HDR but i've played about with the levels & vibrancy on all of them. The one's that are HDR are... 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 11, 12 & 13. The others aren't HDR images but have had the levels adjusted and other filters applied in CS5. They were also all taken with a polerizing filter attached so the trees, clouds and sky look more vibrant even in the un-altered raw files.

Both the wall pics are HDR but have been processed with different settings one washed out and the other with higher colour saturation & vibrancy settings. With the washed out one i then processed the sky area differently to the rest of the image so that the walls were washed out but the sky not as much. Then added some vignetting to darken the edges of the image down a little.

I wasn't as happy as i'd hoped with this bunch of images.... Tried a few different things and settled with these results... Have had a couple more ideas about one or two of the pics i took that weekend so might re-process one or two of these differently.

Also 3, 8, 9, 11 & 12 turned out ok bearing in mind they were all taken from the top of a moving open-top bus. :giggle:

Nice pictures. Hope you had a great day in York. I love it here... only thing is that all the touristy stuff wears off after a while! The minster never gets boring though.. it certainly is impressive the way it towers over the whole city thanks to laws that stop any other buildings from being any taller than it!

The Beacon is All Saints Church btw. Also known as Pavement as it is believed to be one of the first areas in the city to be paved. There is an electric light in the tower now to remember all those who have died in the wars.

Did you walk on any of the walls? I think that gives a lovely view of the city in parts... passing over beer gardens and round the back of some impressive buildings etc.

Also you should see that ice cream van driving there in the morning. It's a bit of a struggle getting up the hill and down a couple of gears it seems!

Cheers Phil.

Yeah we had a great time. We stayed in a small boutique hotel just out from the Bootham Bar called Marmadukes. I remember about the church being called all saints but named the picture with the tower being used as a beacon hundreds of years ago to guide people in from the surrounding woodlands etc...

We didn't walk on any of the walls this time as we had so much planned during the days we were there but i've walked around parts of them before as, working for the railway for over 20 years, i've been to York quite a few times in my career on courses etc...

Would love to see the ice cream van turning up there each morning. :giggle:
