TDi power stops at 3000rpm

Featured Replies

I have a problem that appeared today when I accelerate the car pulls until 3000rpm and then no power, there is a sound like a waste gate blowing but not a lot else. I didn't think these cars had waste gates tho I have seen mention of pressure regulators which I guess is similar

I saw one thread that mentioned variable vanes sticking, I didn't know the TDi 110 had a variable turbo is this correct? If they do have this and they do stick would that give symptoms as I describe?

My first thought is that I had a cat fitted earlier in the year and this may have knocked one of the joints which has moved and is leading to blowing (or sucking) in the intake/exhaust system if so what would I see i.e lots of smoke?

I haven't had the chance to have a look yet but any suggestions as to tests to carry out would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Steve

the 110 does indeed have a VVT based turbo.

No power after 3000 is most likely to be a MAF sensor failure I would think. Unpluggin the MAF will cause the car to use a generic air profile and should get it over 3k (will log an error in ECU though)

Do you have access to VAGCOM? Sticky vanes would cause the car to go into limp mode - turning the ignition off and back on again will cure it until they next stick, also an Overboost fault will be logged in the ECU.
