well at least it seems its a common problem !! secondary air pump ? rivets ? :o I know nothing !!! will do some looking up - just quickly when you say easy fix do you mean replace the rivets or the pump as a whole unit....

cheers guys

The 2 halves of the secondary air pump housing are riveted together, & eventually the rivets fail causing the housing to seperate. Fix involves removing the rivets & replacing them with nuts & bolts. There's a good how to on uk-mkivs,net.

It's worth making sure the 2 pipes that attach to the pump are secure too.

Not sure what kit you don't have to do this job, but getting yourself a few basic tools would be a good way forward and to be honest the cost of the tools would probably be cheaper than paying a garage to do this - as they most probably fit a replacement secondary air pump rather than fixing the old one, so that would bump up the price somewhat.

If you take the whole thing off you need a blanking plate from Forge to fit to the side of the engine

http://www.forgemotorsport.co.uk/content.asp?inc=product&cat=200101&product=FMEGRBP

And you also need to fit a resistor into the multiplug to fool the ECU into thinking the secondary air pump is still there.

If you're happy with a socket and drive set it's easier just to take the pump off and replace the rivets with bolts and put it back on.

hi chaps, does the secondary air pump affect the idle?

the problem is the same as above but the idle pulses as well after the noise has gone.

and also she seems to splutter!!

While the secondary air pump is working the idle should be about 200rpm higher than usual but it should settle down after that. If it isn't settling down after starting it from cold and letting the secondary air pump do it's thing you may have a dodgy coolant temperature sensor.

Worth removing & cleaning the throttle body too. N.B. do not force the butterfly flap open on drive by wire throttle body.

Is it easy to do?

I don't no were to start anyone got pics to help?

Cheers.
