Turbo upgrade for 110tdi

Featured Replies

Well, I appear to have slight sticky vane problems. It's fine during normal driving, but a sustained period of boost (e.g., overtaking up a hill or in a taller gear) often causes an overboost (I've not VAGCOM'd this yet, but I'm pretty sure this is it). Switching the ignition off and on clears the fault.

I am seriously considering just bolting a different turbo on instead of attempting to clean the (very delicate looking) internals of a turbo. I was intending to map the car this summer anyway, although with the current turbo issues unresolved that is obviously not an option. What is the cheapest turbo upgrade for a 110tdi? I am not looking to seek out mega power gains and was originally going to be happy with a custom remap and that's it, so there's no point looking at big turbos.

My main priority is cost . . . a different turbo will require a custom map, so I need to try and cost-save where possible. I would have thought that fitting a turbo shouldn't be an impossible DIY task either.

So which turbo is likely to be a good option? I am aware that quite a few turbos from the VAG range are not direct plug-and-play and require some adaption, although I have no idea on cost and time required for doing this.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

take turbo off and soak in a bucket of petrol should clean everything

I believe he's put a PD150 turbo and injectors off of a Transporter onto his 110, with a custom map to suit. Good for about 180bhp and silly amounts of torque.

Often, the reason why the vanes are gunked up is that the car is driven too gently and they don't move through their full range often enough. So, if you're not using the car hard enough to keep it all in working order in standard trim, do you think that a bigger turbo remap is really a great idea?

Anyway, if you've got gummed vanes, then my cut-price solution is to drive it like you stole it for a few tanks. 200 or so should do it.

Mine sticks virtually every day. I have noticed it does it when doing an overtake up hill, but more worryingly it can do it at slow speed as well. If in queuing traffic (say traffic lights for a roundabout), once I get to the roundabout and as soon as a pull away the car has no power and can just about get up to 2500 rpm, cycling the ignition cures it, but doing that in traffic while going up a gentle hill surrounded by traffic is not always easy. I know that sounds more like a MAF fault, but it is not consistent - always seems to be worse at the start of a journey, and by the time I am home, I am more likely to get the sticky vanes/traditional limp home (as below)

Normally when my vanes get stuck at higher speeds/rpm you feel the car start to slow, stutter and then limp mode happens

Are you getting the correct fault codes to confirm over-boost (sticky vanes) ? Think it's P0234 - see diagnostics section to confirm this. I have had similar problems to the sticky vanes (just like your Mbanes) and seems to be cured by N75 and MAP replacement - fingers crossed. Personally I would like to be sure that the turbo is definitely at fault before condemning it.

I have replaced my n75 before, but never the MAP. I have a working copy of vag-com (and a laptop to run it on - at last!) so I might try taking a few logs.

Normally my car just logs the traditonal overboost fault code and nothing else in the fault code section (apart from when I have forgotten to plug the MAF back in :giggle: )

Lol it may be more than that, I have bigger injectors than the transporter in the car, have to put it on a dyno and see :) I do have my old 110 Turbo for sale, I had no problems whatsoever with it, maybe because I did give it some stick every now and again...PM me if you are interested :)

true , but Rob doesn't know the meaning of driving "gently" lol....

Rob, you looking for more power already? not satisfied with a paltry 110 bhp ? ;) you should have kept the primera
