thank you, that seems a doddle compared with the resistor, I'll get one and fit it.

you were quite right.

 

Full of leaves and it's an easy, and cheap, job to replace

Oops! Just over two years after I replaced the resistor pack (with much help from here - thanks guys!) and the low speed resistor has gone again.

 

Thinks: why do they go in the winter? It would be so much easier to fix in the summer!

Why would you use low speed in the summer?
