Octavia 1.6 CR TDi

Featured Replies

Thinking of buying one of these 1.6cr tdi octavia.

Anybody have one & do they do the 60mpg + as in brochure?.

Are they as realible as the 1.9 pd which can easy achive 50mpg.

Thanks in advance :)

Hi my Octavia Break/combi has 3800km in its first month on the road.

Since new never reset the computer and now says an average of 5.6L per 100km.

20% city and 80% open road ( anyone who has been to Portugal knows open road is 120km/h and above)

I'm loving my 1.6 CR Tdi estate. If SWMBO and child are on board, I drive it sensibly, when not, I'm a little more "spirited" on the gas pedel..

After just over a month (I have no hard evidence) but it's around 50 MPG... If I were more sensible, it's be higher.

50+ Sounds good enough

Does anyone know if the DPF gives trouble on these models?

Have read a few horror treads about them on this.

I'm averagin 46-48 on A/B roads. M1 on a normal day = 60MPG. M40 on a quiet day :giggle: = 40MPG.

Currently on 50.1combined.

I would get a 2.0CR if I ordered again this engine does require some forward planning and paitience. However ,overtaking is perfectly safe unlike some people would suggest. Pulling out of junctions in 1st gear is a different matter though, sometimes it is floor and dump the clutch for me.

Not wanting to slate anyone who's got this engine as on paper it seems like a good option for economy, but I for one am not a fan!

I took out a new Golf 1.6 CR SE last week for a long test drive and found it to be pretty gutless. 105 bhp, 5 speed and had 11,000 miles on the clock.

My main criticisms of the car are lack of pace - I know it's a 105 bhp, but I couldn't tell when the turbo was coming in, it was very flat. That might be down to the higher gearing though and linear power delivery of the CR engine. Also, the gearbox was pretty stiff and notchy and nowhere near as slick as my PD130, but I'll put that down to it being new and still needing time to loosen up.

Initially, I would have been interested in this engine (whether in Golf or Octavia) as a replacement for my current car, but I've been mightily put off after that test drive. As I say, not wanting to berate anyone who's bought one, horses for course etc.

I've also read of a number of DPF issues with this engine on the Seat forums as well new Polo owners.

I moved over to turbo diesels 6 years ago, but maybe it's time to switch back to petrol - the 1.4 TSi engine is a cracking little motor!

I love my 1.6, but next time I think I'll save up for a BMW 320d ED. 163bhp, 0-60 - 8 seconds but with better economy (Combined - 68.9mpg) and lower emissions (109g/km) than the Octavia 1.6D. Why can't VW design an engine that good?

It's just a shame the BMW is far more expensive and less practical - it's very tempting though.

this is what ive been thinging, we are moving over to the 1.6tdi cr with our octavias, we do high mile's and carry alot of kit for our job, luckiley i got a 2.0 tdi pd three months ago so im fine for nearly 4 years, not sure these engines will cope.

and you'll end up spending far more on the initial outlay than you'll ever save from the ED......

Mine is the DPF - 5 spd Manual.

I've heard some say the Golf isn't a good comparison as the gearing is different in the Golf. I'd be interested to hear a comparison between the Golf and Octy if you get the chance to test drive the 1.6CR Octy. A lot of the criticism of this engine seems to stem from the Golf.

I know what you mean about the turbo though, although I'm wondering if that's just more of a case of the difference in the power delivery of the PD vs CR engines. First time I test drove a CR, I floored it and kept waiting for the punch which never arrived. As a consequence it "felt" slow until you looked at the speedo and realised how fast you were going.

Before buying the Octavia my wife and I went to drive a Seat Altea XL 1.6 tdi, then we went to drive the Octavia.

When my wife started to drive de Octavia de first thing she asked after a km or so, was if the engine was the same?

I said yes of course. She replied by saying that it seems that has twice the power.

VW, Seat, Audi and Skoda have same engine but diferent software.

I been suprised at times with this small engine. Lacks power at times and the gearbox ratio needs to be get used to.

The DDF never lit up on mine and from what I know it only lights up on Greenline models mostly and people who drive 3 or 5 km a day, where the car does not heat up.

Another thing is that here in Portugal the 2.0 tdi is 8 to 10 thousand euros more.

The 1.6 only pays 115 euros a year tax road when the 2.0 pays 200 euros.

Thats why 90% are 1.6 tdi, other 10% are between 1.2, 1.4 and 2.0 tdi.

I waited 3 months for mine.
