Cam Follower Wear at 28K miles

Featured Replies

For one reason or another i actually forgot about doing this since the last change :o (getting married etc :))

I bought 2 cam followers last time so had a spare sat in the Garage. However for the last 28k miles it hasn't been changed :S

After a gentle reminder with a thread put on another forum today linking my tutorial i thought i'd nip out and get mine swapped over.

I took some pics to show what the wear is like on a Mar 2007 TFSi engine. I kept the new one in the pot whilst changing the pics just so i didn't get it dirty.

That's picked up badly. Defective hardening? It would be interesting to know about the oil that's been used - fully or semi synthetic?

Hopefully you have caught it in time before it damaged the camshaft lobe.

Thats the usual wear I would expect after that milage on an uprated pump. My 60k one on a standard pump was around that sort of wear. I check mine every month to make sure its ok. You can never be too cautious with this part as a camshaft costs alot more than a follower!!! I have seen and changed way too many fooked ones.

According to Audi that is absolutely fine and to be expected after that sort of mileage regardless of uprated pump or not.

Here is an extract of a TSB from Audi. As you can see Figure C is similar if not worse than mine and is classed as normal wear

The oil that is in the engine is Vag's own longlife oil as the car is set on variable servicing

My actual fuel pump has just failed on me!!!!!!!

Ouch

Perfect excuse to get the APR one

I won't hijack your thread here Carl, but I'm f*cking sick of things going wrong now. Yes the K04 upgrade is absolutely mental and I love it but it seems you pay a price for such power. Worth bearing in mind for anyone considering the upgrade in the future.

I've got the pump all done under warranty and my dealer has even agreed to swap out my Autotech internals into the new pump. Don't know what's wrong with the existing pump, the piston still moves correctly - maybe a sensor has gone, I'll find out tomorrow.

How did you know it had failed?

Did you have any fault codes? Or was I just through it running wrong?

Your the first I've heard of a pump failing. Did your ED30 block not come with a pump?

Glad your getting it done under warranty. New pump is circa £300 iirc

I was driving at 10mph at the time, the car juddered abruptly. No power, revs wouldn't climb. VAGCOM said low fuel pressure. I reckon it's a sensor on the pump that has gone, because the mechanical operation of the pump seams to be as it should be upon first inspection.

New VW fuel pump is around £180.

Sorry to hear your troubles Harry but I have heard of a few of these sensors going titsup one way or another.

Harry is my mod hero.

Fact.

That's a lot better than I thought.

Good to know if mine ever goes t!ts up.

The low fuel pressure fault is usually due to the follower failing. The pump gets a bit sticky and starts hitting the follower under deceleration and then you get a nice hole in the follower with the pump now running straight of the cam. This wears the fuel pump away and the cam gets a nice groove in it. You get the low fuel pressure fault as the pump isnt pushed in far enough by the cam to build up the pressure. We only use the APR pumps because of the failures we have had with the Autotech and KMD pumps.

New pump has seemed to have cured it thank god. We think that a sensor failed on the pump.

I'm a happy bunny again :D

Glad all sorted Harry

  • 3 weeks later...

I had my follower changed last week, so I thought I'd post some photos up.

Car has done 30k miles, 56 plate, standard map, standard HPFP, 3 skoda services since new.

Haven't checked mine yet :S

2006 vrs with 88k km (54k miles)

Should I be checking it or is it just on certain models?

Anyone have a howto on it?
