Hi to everyone who have seen the light.

New to the board and have already found the content fantastic and helpful.

Own Octavia 1.9tdi 2001 and as happy with it today as the day I drove it out of the show room.

Just out of warranty and can finally to start my own maintenance without the cloud of Skoda warranty hanging over my head.

I understand that Haynes haven't yet published a manual for the Octavia but there was some talk about a CD version out there somewhere. Any news gratefully received.

Guess what the glow plug warning light has just started flashing. Spooky so soon after service and warranty.

Welcome!

This could be a faulty brake light switch - check your brake lights first. Its a common problem.

Thanks to you all for the welcome. :)

Welcome Redeye.

You say glowplug light flashing? Do you mean it's coming on when you first start up from cold and staying on longer or flashing randomly?

Doesn't the glow plug light stay on longer initially due to the colder temperatures IIRC?

Not having difficulty starting it are you, or are you?

Hi all

Thanks for your tips re the glow plug problem,

The glow plug goes out as normal after starting and then comes on flashing very shortly afterwards.

I have checked all the brake lights and they are fine. I did check the forum after my last post and found the references to glow plug warning lights.

One of our more technically minded members was able to explain that the brake light switch can also be the culprit as this switch has four wires (2 for the brake lights and 2 for the ECU) the ECU wires are used to send a signal to the ECU when the brakes are applied so that the emmissions can be reduced by lowering the fuel/air amounts. This apparently works on the principal of "You won't be needing the acceleration whilst the brakes are on"

I am hoping that this is the case as I have found a distinct lack of power when accelerating anything above small throttle openings whilst this warning light is flashing.

A further test revealed that the engine starts quite normally and the glow plug light goes out as normal. It stay unlit whilst idleing but as soon as you try to move the vehicle with acceleration the light starts flashing. Here's hoping that the above theory is the case and there is a short on the 2 wires to the ECU.

Apparently the replacement / modified switch that they now supply is about

At last ...

A trip to the dealers got the fault finding computer out and an un-identifiable fault code "81 short to positive" the mechanic trawled through the code manuals to no avail. He tried a new brake light switch in any event and it made no difference. (never mind yours truly got a new modified switch for nowt as it wasn't worth swapping them over again)

Lifting off the engine cover revealed a "snipped" wire which led from the #3 injector to the wiring harness. Closer inspection revealed it snipped through in two places !!!

This obviously has some sort of control on the injector timings hence the loss of power.

Now as cynical as I am, I don't suspect the dealers because it would be far too obvious. We are at a complete loss as to how the wire became damaged. It was the first time I had ever seen beneath the cover due to it being under warranty at the time.

Anyway I asked the dealership (Browns in High Wycombe) whether SKODA would assist in any way given that it was only 2 weeks out of warranty.

I went away made a soldered repair, which restored the power not the warning light from flashing whilst I waited for an answer.

RESULT.

Browns said that SKODA would supply the #3 injector (
