Anyone used Kumho ECSTA SPT KU31s?

Featured Replies

Need to change all 4 tyres due to a slight bulge in the sidewall of one of my tyres and it's not worth replacing just one due to wear.

My mate reckons the Kumho's are good both in terms of performance and wear; he had them on his BMW 645i and was really pleased with them.

The last two sets of tyres I have bought have been vredestien ultrac sessantas and whilst they perform well in wet and dry conditions they don't wear that well.

Thoughts please folks!

I used the kumho's only lasted 6k thou good in the dry awefull in the wet.Im now trying Falken 452's seem ok so far but me thinks 6 or 7 k max again.

I have used the KU31's on other skoda's/peugeots/toyota's and really like them. My driving is very mixed and found a front pair to last around 20k. Never had any problems with them in the wet or the dry.:thumbup:

I am currently using Falken ZE912 225/45/17 on my remapped PD140, I am on my second set and will be ordering again soon. They give good grip in both wet and dry and are reasonably quite. If you don't drive like a loon you should get 15-20k from the fronts. I have used the Kumhos and I did find them good but the grip on a "damp" road was a bit dodgy.

I've got pair of KU31's on the front of my PD140.

Do the job well enough and seem to be wearing pretty well too. The dunlops on the rear are almost done, so there'll be another

pair of the Khumo's going on the back.

Running a set on the front of mine, done about 8k with average wear. Used to have them on my vectra, with no problems.

Good grippy tyre (soft compounds), but dont last long. Barely got 11k out of a pair on the front of a Leon 1.8t.

I had major sawtoothing on rears when I had the on the fab vrs... Rear geometry couldn't be altered.

I won't buy them again. They are an average tyre in most respects. When new they performed well in dry an wet. Only lasted about 10000 on front.

Very happy with mine - have a full set on my petrol vRS. The wear rate seems good so far, certainly better than the Falken FK-452's that I had previously which were worn to 3mm within 8,500 miles and to under 1.6mm in about 11,000 miles. I question the comment about them being a 'soft' combound. The Kumho's have a tread-wear index of 320 and the Falken's are 280 from memory. Most premium tyres will be around 200 or under.

Overall they do everything I need from a tyre very well. OK they could have a little more grip in the wet, but when they let go they are safe and predictable, overall I prefer them to the FK-452's and they are on a par with Michelin PS2's IMHO, which I have also used on my vRS. Lastly I feel I should mention that they are noticeably quieter that both.

I use this site to decide;

http://www.tyretest.com;

I would not compair other makes of car/tyre size to decide - as tyrs do vary by size etc.

My Occty has Michelin - 30k from new,but need to replace 2 soon.

I am not sure which brand to buy!

Happy with Michelin except for expence and a little less grip in the wet.................

What do do?

In a group tyre test in AutoBild (German car magazine) they rated as 'Recommended'. Basically scored the same as premium brand tyres such as Continental and Dunlop. The only area in which they were not above average was high speed aquaplaning on a curve. They rated well for noise, carcase strength, wet and dry braking etc. A good all round tyre.

Yep, a decent tyre. Especially for the money. I understand they're being replaced quite soon by a new Kumho model, as they have been around a good few years.

I'd buy some again, should the opportunity come up. Problem is there's always new releases to try as well, and I want to try some Vredstein Sessantas, as well as some Hankook V12s :)

I have used the Hankook V12's, I would highly recommend them. Camskills stocks of Hankooks are very eratic and the price seems to fluctuate alot.

Michelin PS3 all the way

I wouldn't compromise on a tyre to be honest. It doesn't matter how good a driver you are, your brakes are etc. The only thing that keeps you on the road are 4 CD sized contact patches from your tyres.

For the sake of saving a few quid i would just get decent tyres

I went from Vred Sessanta to Michelin PS3 and dry performance is the same if not better however wet performance is leagues ahead. Plus the PS3 have a treadwear rating of 320 whereas the Vreds are 260 iirc. So the tyres will last longer in theory.

Yep, V12s next I reckon :)

Where are people getting this treadwear data from? Don't think I've seen it mentioned before.

Mostly from the sidewall of the tyres I expect emoticon-0105-wink.gif

However a quick search on the manufacturers website usually reveals all. Think there is also an American website, might be tirerack.com that has lots of tyre data (incl. TWI) and consumer reviews.

Hi,

There is the Kumho KH31. I thought this was the tyre that replaced the KU31?

I need 2 new tyres, and over the last week or so Blackcircles seems to have removed the KU31, and only has the KH31.

I have Kumho's on the front at the moment and they seem alright (they do not show if they are KU or KH). Certainly been handling the power/torque in the dry alright.

The KHs are in a different Kumho model range IIRC. The KU are an Ecsta Sport.

you stole my 100% of my reply! :)

Had a set on my previous Ibiza PD130 and they sawtoothed badly - assumed it was the alignment on the car

Bought another set when i got my Fabia - just as bad sawtoothing so have since switched the rears the front to work through what's left of tread and put Pirelli P Zero Neros on the back.

Kuhmos were a bargin when they were £50+/- a corner but now Pirellis are only £10 more i'd go that route everytime

Just been onto black circles and the KU31's are there, but the price has sky rocketed on them.... £86 or £92 depening on speed rating....

I got two V rated tires in the past few months for £116.12 fitted !

If the price has increased to that degree, that's probably an indication that stock is starting to run low and that they're no longer being made by Kumho, and that a replacement will shortly appear. Will have to see if that is indeed this KH31...

Hi got a set on my Octy for the last 8k and i cannot rate them highly enough. Nexens are quite good too, had Nexens on the Honda and they lasted 14k, the original OEM yoko's lasted 10k, as did the next set of dunlops with NO spirited driving. Got kuhmos on there now, set number 4, time will tell.

The KH is a lower spec tyre than the KU series. AFAIK the KU31 is still in production. I think supply is a bit sporadic because they ship them in by the boatload and when a certain size runs out its a question of waiting for the next batch to arrive.

Incidentally, Kumho are now OE suppliers on the Ford Focus and some VW's. Some sizes are also sourced from the USA, where they have a factory.

Yeah I was a bit quick with my reply without the correct research! Looking at Kumho's website, the KH & KU are different types of tyre. You could think of that KH is 'sports touring' & KU is 'sports'.

The 'new' KU on Black circles is the runflat version - Ecsta SPT KU31 XRP (that is why price is up). So I guess the ride is cr*p now as that what most people say about the extra stiff walls of a runflat.

I want to know, when are 'normal' KU's coming down in price. I am about to hit the wear bars!!! So gutting that about a week ago KU's were less than £90 each fitted :-( Looks like I might have to goto the KH or Falken FK-452?

Kumho tyre selector
